MARIETTA — A Marietta company has been recognized for its design of a book about the City of Vienna.

Ullman Design received an Award of Excellence from Creative Quarterly for “Discovering Vienna, West Virginia: Origins. History. Heritage.”

The company will be featured in issue 73 of the international journal and the 100 Best Show issue for 2023.

Creative Quarterly is an international journal focusing on promoting the best work in graphic design, illustration, photography and fine art. Worldwide juried competitions are held quarterly and are open to artists, designers and photographers at all levels — professionals, students and amateurs. Winners are featured in the print issue and online gallery of the journal.

“Discovering Vienna” was written and designed by Christina Ullman of Ullman Design. It was among only five professional entries to receive the award in the competition.

“I am thrilled that this book has received international recognition at this level,” Ullman said. “As its writer and the designer, the book became a very personal project — one that I am very proud to have created.”

Published by the Friends of Vienna, the coffee table book provides a visual history of the two primary families, the Briscoes and Spencers, who settled in the area and were responsible for the founding of the City of Vienna in West Virginia in the late 1700s.

The book is filled with historical documents, maps and other artifacts that provide context to the actions of both families in light of events in the American colonies and Europe at this time. The ancestry of both families is also documented, tracing their roots back to the English monarchy and Viking warriors.

The design of the Discovering Vienna was inspired by vintage typography in the late 1800s, combined with decorative lines and border frames implemented in historical and photography books and vintage maps from the early 1700s.

“I have always found history fascinating. My goal was to make the information I uncovered while researching this book come alive through numerous documents and visuals,” Ullman said. “It is truly a visual history that uses design to captivate and communicate to the reader.”

Ullman Design is a graphic design and illustration studio in Marietta that specializes in developing print collateral, identity systems, promotions and publications such as books and magazines.

Ullman Design was first commissioned by the City of Vienna Tree and Beautification Commission to develop historical panels on the city’s history and heritage as part of its Trek Vienna project. Developing the book was a natural next step in telling the city’s history.

“We are very fortunate that Christina Ullman took on this book as an extension of the Trek Vienna project,” said Jack Mathers, president of the Friends of Vienna. “We are so pleased with the book and how it showcases the early history of our city. It’s wonderful to have it receive recognition on an international level.”

The book can be purchased by contacting Theresa Smith at the city of Vienna at 304-295-4541, extension 337, or 304-482-6526.

The cost of the 180-page history is $100, she said. Smith advises not to wait to purchase a book as less than 50 remain.
