Energy Harbor seeking new buyers for Pleasants County Power Station

ST. MARYS –A bid for the Pleasants County Power Station has been pulled and the owners are looking for new interested parties.

Local media reports have reported an offer for the plant was recently pulled and owner Energy Harbor is putting the plant back on the market for potential buyers.

The Parkersburg News and Sentinel is reaching out to officials from Energy Harbor, the Office Of West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, Workforce West Virginia and the Pleasants County Commission.

Energy Harbor, formerly known as First Energy Solutions, had previously announced that in an effort to become 100 percent carbon free, it would close the Pleasants Power Station on Willow Island along with the Sammis Power Station in Stratton, Ohio.

Pleasants Power, located along the Ohio River outside of Belmont and five miles south of St. Marys in Pleasants County, has been online since 1979.

No Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) is currently available on the Workforce West Virginia website in regards to the plant.

The closure was announced in March 2022 and local officials have been at work trying to find a buyer for the facility in hopes of keeping it open.

According to Energy Harbor last March, the plant annually burns more than 3 million tons of coal mined from Ohio and Marshall counties. The station includes two 650 megawatt generating units and employs more than 160 people, as well as an additional 400 seasonal jobs when the plant shuts down for maintenance.

Starting at $2.99/week.
