Parkersburg development director nominated
Barber has worked for the city 6 years
PARKERSBURG –Mayor Tom Joyce has nominated Development Projects Administrator Ryan Barber as the city’s next development director.
Joyce informed Parkersburg City Council of his selection this week and asked them to confirm the appointment at their next meeting, scheduled for Tuesday.
“For the past six years, Ryan has demonstrated a dedication to public service and professional administration and management of both the city CDBG programs (and) the Wood County HOME Consortium,” Joyce said in his message to council. “His background and performance demonstrates his qualifications and motivation for this important position, and I am confident his confirmation will prove an asset to the city and our community at large.”
Barber was selected following an eight-week regional and national search conducted by Personnel Director Sondra Wallace, Joyce said. He was one of five finalists interviewed by Joyce and Wallace after previous Development Director Rickie Yeager announced he was leaving to take a similar position in Morgantown.
Growing up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Barber came to the area as a student at Ohio Valley University, where he met his future wife, Michelle. After graduating, he returned to Canada but began the process of coming back to the country, and this community in particular.
Barber now holds dual U.S. and Canadian citizenship.
The Mid-Ohio Valley is “very special to me, and now I’m raising a family here,” he said.
Barber worked for a nonprofit before joining the city as development projects administrator.
“My passion has always been in public service,” he said. “(I) always want to have a positive impact on my community.”
Council President Zach Stanley said he plans to support Barber’s nomination.
“I am sure that Sondy and the mayor did their due diligence in interviewing all the applicants,” he said. “I think he’ll be a good asset.”
