WILLIAMSTOWN — Airport numbers are starting to come back from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the discussion at Tuesday’s meeting of the Wood County Airport Authority.

For March, there were 339 enplanements, 87 more than last year. Numbers are about what they were in 2019, according to Glen Kelly, manager of the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport.

“(It’s a) very positive trend. They’ve enplaned 110 in the past three days. We’re starting to see it come back,” Kelly said.

Between Beckley and Parkersburg, planes are filled every day, Chuck Peters, station manager for Contour Airlines, said.

About half of the enplanements were bookings through American Airlines due to the interline agreement allowing passengers to book to any destination through American Airlines and fly out of Parkersburg without having to re-check baggage.

The airport’s audit was discussed and no deficiencies were found.

All three roofs are finished and the LED lighting project is underway and is projected to be finished in July.

Samples of terrain on the airport property were taken to diagnose an erosion problem.

“I’m curious to see that they’re going to say what we have to do to fix that. We’re seeing more erosion this year,” Kelly said. “They’re thinking they’re going to have to put a wall in.”

A joint meeting with the marketing group, the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport Authority, will be held later this month to discuss the future of the group. Kelly hopes to form an advisory board and work with chambers of commerce and convention and visitors bureaus.

Wood County Airport Authority President Bill Richardson cited grant opportunities for airports for COVID-19 relief and said the authority will look into applying for those funds.
