Marietta salon finds bigger, aims for better with new shop

MARIETTA — After a ceiling collapse in early January, Trina Rataiczak had to find a new home for her hair salon, Peace Love Scissors.

She had opened the Gilman Avenue site on May 15 after hair salons were shut down in March due to COVID.

“It was just a leak,” Rataiczak said. “We patched it a couple of times, but I think it needed replacing totally. It was an old building.”

They started renting the former Beauty Barn in January 2020 and their lease was almost up when the ceiling collapsed.

She and her husband, Terry, were driving around looking for a new place when they drove by the Scammel Street site.

“They didn’t have a sign out, but we stopped and asked,” she said.

The new shop opened Jan. 18 and the new shop is “two or three times” bigger than the last shop, Rataiczak said.

“People love it. It’s bigger and for a lot of people, it’s closer,” she said. “We haven’t any anybody not follow me here.”

Her favorite part of the new location is the parking. On Gilman Avenue, there were very few parking spaces available.

She also enjoys being near the Third Street Deli.

“That didn’t hurt. I’m not mad at that,” she said, laughing.

Now that Rataiczak has a bigger space, she’d like to hire someone to fill her vacant chair.

Friday morning, she spent time cutting the hair of Shelby Marshall, 84, of Lowell. Marshall visited Peace Love Scissors when it was on Gilman Avenue.

“I just needed a new beautician,” she said. “I found her and I like her.”

Rataiczak said she tries to be competitive with her prices, with $12 adult hair cuts, $10 child hair cuts and $30 perms. The cost for foiling and highlighting starts at $55.

“Right now, I’m open by appointment. I have time for walk-ins, though,” she said. She plans for the shop to be closed Wednesdays and Sundays, and the easiest way to make an appointment is by calling 740-538-5556. Appointments can also be made through her Facebook page or website, peacelovescissors.com.

Although they had spent several months getting the old shop ready for opening, Rataiczak isn’t unhappy about the move.

“It was a happy disaster,” she said. “That’s what I think of it.”
