Commercial licenses to change
COLUMBUS – Commercial Driver License restrictions will change on July 1, 2015, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles said. The process to obtain a CDL is regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The new restrictions are as follows:
* (P) No passengers in Commercial Motor Vehicle bus (temporary only)
A Commercial License Permit holder with a P or PS endorsement(s) are prohibited from operating a CMV carrying passengers, other than Federal/State auditors and inspectors, test examiners, other trainees, and the CDL holder accompanying the CLP holder
* (X) No cargo in CMV tank vehicle (temporary only)
A CLP holder with an N endorsement may only operate an empty tank vehicle and is prohibited from operating any tank vehicle that previously contained hazardous materials that has not been purged of any residue
* (V) Medical variance
Indicates the CDL holder has been issued a medical variance on the CDLIS driver record
* (M) No Class A passengers vehicle
This applies to CLP or CDL Class A drivers who are restricted to operating only Class B or Class C passenger vehicles
* (N) No Class A and B passengers vehicle
This applies to CDL Class A or Class B drivers who are restricted to operating only Class C passenger vehicles
* (K) Intrastate only
If a CDL holder certifies their status as either Non-Excepted Intrastate or excepted Intrastate, the CDL holder is restricted from operating a CMV in interstate commerce
* (Z) No full air-equipped CMV
A CLP holder preforms the skill test in a vehicle equipped with air over hydraulic brakes. For the purposes of the skills test and the restriction, air over hydraulic brakes include any braking system operating partially on the air brake and partially on the hydraulic brake principle.
* (O) No tractor trailer CMV
Applies to CDL Class A drivers who perform the skill test in a Class A combination vehicle with the power unit and towed unit connected with a pintle hook or other non-fifth wheel connection.
An applicant who passes a skills test using a combination vehicle that is not a Truck Tractor Semi-Trailer combination, but is otherwise equipped with a fifth wheel, will be issued a CDL with an “O” restriction
* (E) No manual transmission
Prohibits CDL holders from operating CDL Class vehicles equipped with a manual transmission. For the purposes of the skills test and the restriction, an automatic transmission includes any transmission not operating fully on the gear shift and clutch principle
There will be one new, additional maneuver as part of the basic skills test: the sight side parallel park.
