Tiger boys, Warren girls win Waterford Invite

Marietta A and B teams finished first and second

Photo by Ron Johnston The Marietta High boys golf team won the Waterford Inviational Wednesday at Lakeside Golf Course in Beverly. Marietta’s A team finished first with a score of 321 while the B team came in second at 334.

BEVERLY — Marietta High enjoyed a winning day on the links.

The Tigers A and B boys teams were 1 and 2, respectively, in the big school (white) division Wednesday at the annual Waterford Invitational at Lakeside Golf Course.

“We won at the Logan Invitational yesterday (Tuesday) and today, and that’s a big step from last year,” said MHS head coach Bryan Whittekind. “The kids really worked hard this offseason. Coach Herb is great with them, and they kind of trust us to help them out.”

The Marietta A team finished with 321 points while the B squad had 334. Warren notched 345.

“Since I started last year, Warren’s been our measuring point,” Whittekind said. “They’ve had the strongest program the last couple of years.”

In the small school (green) division, the Belpre boys were runners-up to Barnesville.

And, the Warren girls, sparked by Hannah Jankauskas’ 89, finished first over Logan.

Miller’s Hunter Dutiel carded the best boys’ round with a 69, while Caitlin Cotterill of Meigs had the girls’ best score, an 85. Ella Keffer of Fort Frye shot a 93.

The Marietta A team was paced by JB Wharff and Grayson Herb, each of whom carded a 79. A.J. Graham notched an 80, and Liam Ritter an 83.

Josh Sandford led the B team with an 81 while Andrew Elliott had an 83. Justin Hartley and Farley each shot an 85 to figure in on the scoring.

Trista Stanley paced the MHS girls with a 96.

Warren was led by Chance Weihl’s 76. Nathan Heff chipped in with an 82.

“I thought overall we had a pretty good day,” said Warriors boss Nathan Evans. “Chance and Nathan each had a good round.

“Jacob Smeeks had a good round going but had a couple of bad holes. He swung the club well, though. And Aiden (Woodruff) played OK (97).

Evans paused.

“Early on in the season, I don’t particularly look at scores but look at how we’re swinging the golf club. Are we getting up and down, making putts? I was happy today.”

Warren actually wasn’t at full strength as two of its better golfers — Seth Dennis and Caleb Davis — were competing for Beverly/Lowell Post 389/750 in the Great Lakes Regional baseball tournament in Charleston, Illinois.

“We wish them nothing but the best,” said Evans of Dennis and Davis. “I told them to go out and enjoy and have a good time.”

Belpre was paced by Eric Dotson’s 82. Jacob Ferrier and Matt Deems shot 85 and 88, respectively.

Curry Ryan-coached Waterford had three golfers shoot in the 80s –Brooks Suprano (83), Gavin Brooker (84), and Ryan Hendershot (88).

Bryce Schilling led the Fort Frye boys with an 82, while Keffer had a 93 for the girls.
