Three area thinclads qualify for state track

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Three local track athletes qualified for the state meet Friday during regional action.

Marietta’s Baylee Brown, Fort Frye’s Maddie Webb and Belpre’s Eli Fullerton all placed fourth or better in their respective events to earn a berth in next weekend’s state meet in Columbus.

In the Division I, Region 3 meet, Brown placed third in the pole vault with a mark of 11 feet, 4 inches. Brown will be competing at state for the first time in her prep career. An eighth-or-better finish at state will give the Tiger senior All-Ohio status.

Brown’s classmate Torrence Nonnenmacher, an All-Ohio long jumper last season, placed seventh in the event Friday with a mark of 17-1.5.

In the D3, Region 9 meet in Massillon, Webb took home runner-up honors in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 10-6 to earn her third straight trip to state. Webb came in second at regional this year after back-to-back third place finishes the previous two seasons. She’ll go for her first career appearance on the state podium next weekend.

Two other Cadets competed in regional action Friday, with Justin Anderson coming in 10th in the 1600 (4:38.60) and Braden Lipot finishing 14th in the 800 (2:08.01).

Elsewhere in Massillon, Caldwell’s Michael Gerard scored two points in the boys 200 with a seventh-place finish (23.91) and Shenandoah’s Mya Stahl also placed seventh in the girls long jump (15-6). Zep Shakur Payton finished 10th in the high jump at 5-10.

Fullerton claimed the runner-up spot in the 3200 at the D3, Region 11 meet in Lancaster. The Golden Eagle ran the event in 9:44.01 to punch his first ticket to state. He finished .13 seconds behind champion Taylor Vallangeon of Worthington Christian.

Also scoring for the Belpre boys was Collin Alloway, who placed sixth in the shot put at 47-6.5.

On the girls side, Waterford’s Torie Bosner finished just outside the top four. The Wildcats reached 16-2.75 in the long jump to place fifth, 2.75 inches behind South Central’s Izzy Hauler in fourth.
