BEVERLY — Fort Frye prevailed in dramatic fashion on Senior Night.

The Cadets rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge visiting Trimble, 5-4, in non-conference baseball action Tuesday evening.

“We haven’t had one of those in awhile at Fort Frye, so it’s nice to see,” said first-year FFHS skipper Rob Nelson. “Hopefully, that’ll get us going and jump start us again. Baseball is a long season, and we hit one of those lulls where we haven’t hit, haven’t played good defense…and hopefully, today that last inning will wake us up.”

Senior southpaw Luke Nelson was the winning pitcher and also drove in the game-winner with a deep sacrifice fly to center. In seven innings of work, he fanned nine, walked one, allowed four singles, and gave up one earned run.

“Luke pitched a great game,” the Cadet head coach said. “We’ve just got to make plays for him. He got put in some tough situations, but I thought he got stronger.”

Offensively for Fort (10-7), Kelton Fogle drove in three runs, and Matt Duskey had one RBI.

Trimble (11-7) righty Max Hooper suffered the setback on the mound. Gary Brooks and Connor Wright each had two hits for the Tomcats.

Trailing the Cats 4-1 in the bottom of the final frame, Fort catcher Nate Brothers worked Hooper for a walk. After Draeden Turner was hit by a pitch, Devin Layton skied out to left.

Next up, Duskey singled sharply to right to drive in Brothers, making it 4-2.

“Matt Duskey had the flu, a stomach virus, and he wasn’t even here yesterday (vs. Warren),” Rob Nelson said. “He’s been sick all day and even running a temperature. So, for him to come in as a senior, that was a nice hit.”

On Duskey’s hit, Turner stopped at third. And, then, Mason Long pinch ran for Duskey, and stole second base.

With first base open, Hooper walked Eric Isner to fill the sacks for number nine hitter Fogle.

The left-handed-swinging Fogle then drilled a single to right to drive in Turner and Long, knotting the game at 4-all. On the hit, Fogle went to second when the ball got by the Trimble right fielder.

Earlier in the game in the third inning, Fogle tied the score at 1-1 with a deep sacrifice fly to right.

“Kelton’s starting to come around with the bat and hitting the ball,” Nelson said.

On Fogle’s knock, Luke Huffman, running for Isner, was held at third.

Next up, Fort’s leadoff batter Zane Greenleaft was walked to load the bases with one out.

Stepping into the batter’s box was Luke Nelson, who was 0-3 with three flyouts.

Nelson again put the ball in the air, but deep to center field, scoring Huffman with the winning run.

Earlier in the contest in the top of the fourth inning, Trimble capitalized on three Fort errors and plated three runs for a 4-1 advantage.

In the sixth, the Tomcats had a baserunner at third, but Luke Nelson bore down and struck out three straight to get out of the jam.

“That was big to keep it at four,” Rob Nelson said. “So, they (Tomcats) didn’t break it open, and he (Luke) did his job. I’ll take it.”
