VIENNA — Don Fosselman had open heart surgery a little over a year ago.

On Friday at the Parkersburg Country Club, the long-time Parkersburg Big Reds boys’ soccer coach was swinging away in the 19th annual Dave Couch Golf Tournament To Benefit ALS (Amyhthropic Lateral Sclerosis).

“I just had my yearly checkup, and the doctor said he didn’t want to see me anymore,” said Fossleman, smiling. “So, that’s good.”

Fosselman’s foursome also included PHS athletic director Chris Way, PHS boys’ assistant soccer coach Doug Swearingen, and Jerry Steele. The group carded an 86 in flight B, which was won by Richard Adams, Mac McClinton, Butch Shaver, and Hap Esbenshade.

“We had fun,” said Fosselman, who will be coaching his 32nd season of Big Reds boys’ soccer this upcoming fall. “We had some good shots, and we had some bad shots.”

Fosselman was one of 144 golfers competing at the Dave Couch tourney.

“I’ve played here once or twice before, and never won anything,” Fosselman said. “I love playing here at the Country Club.”

In flight A, Eric Moore, Kyle Bowles, Brian McPherson, and Brett Fluharty shot a tournament-best 71 with a 34 on the front 9 and a 37 on the back.

“This is the second year we’ve been together,” said Moore, whose team of four fired a 74 a year ago in the Dave Couch event. “Last year, we finished tied for second.

“We all played well together today.”

Fluharty said they had eagles on No. 6 and 13.

Moore and Bowles are PHS grads, while Fluharty and McPherson attended Parkersburg South and Federal Hocking, respectively.

The foursome of Jason Perrine, Dexter Hughes, Mike Napier, and Vasanth Ananth and the group of Doug Nelson, Scott Parsons, Chuck Henderson, and Phi Chen each carded a 72.

Jim Murphy, Justin McCarter, Tim Fisher, and Rod Harris had a 73 as did Dan Garber, Nathan Fluharty, Brian Lamp, and Gary Brightwell.

In flight B, Adams, McClinton, Shaver, and Esbenshade shot a 77. Mike Williams, Todd Nestor, Rob Richards, and Fred Davis scored a 78 while Sean Smith, Dave McClure, Chris Childress, and Kyle Pierson had a 79.

Blair Couch, son of the event’s namesake, teamed up with Randy Rogers, Jimmy Clinton, and Dave Rossana to shoot an 83.
