GSC women win tourney opener
Pioneers defeat West Liberty, 116-92; one win from Sweet 16
GLENVILLE — Glenville State extended its winning streak to 21 with a 116-92 victory over West Liberty in Friday’s NCAA Division II Atlantic Region first round contest at the Waco Center.
The Pioneers, now 30-2, play either California (Pa.) or Charleston at 7:30 p.m. today with a Sweet 16 berth on the line.
Glenville led 31-25 after a quarter and extended its lead over the Hilltoppers (21-10) to 64-50 by halftime. The Pioneers outscored West Liberty 28-19 in the third period to go up 23 and put the game away. It was the third time this season Glenville defeated WLU.
Six players scored in double figures for the hosts, led by Emily Stoller’s 21 points. Ty Armstrong added 18 points, Re’Shawna Stone netted 17 while Zakiyah Winfield Courtney Davis and Donasja Scott tallied 14 apiece. Davis also posted seven rebounds and three blocks while Stone dished out seven assists.
The Hilltoppers received a game-high 25 points from Marissa Brown. Morgan Brunner added 19, Olivia Belknap put in 17, Brandi Beader chipped in 11 and Taylor Johnson finished with 10. Brown and Johnie Olkosky grabbed nine boards each, Audrey Tingle registered a game-high eight dimes and Johnson blocked three shots.
While both teams were dead even in rebounding (45-all), Glenville State held a significant advantage in turnovers (20-7). The Pioneers also outshot the Hilltoppers, going 45 for 85 (53 percent) from the floor compared to West Liberty’s 36 for 78 (46 percent).
