Williamstown sixth-graders beat Jackson

PARKERSBURG — In a No. 1 versus No. 2 matchup in the 6th grade boys’ Wood County middle school championship, it was the top-seeded Williamstown Yellowjackets that bested the Jackson Generals on Thursday night 41-25 inside Parkersburg High School Memorial Fieldhouse.

The ‘Jackets jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead in the first, but they were quickly answered by back-to-back layups off steals by Noah Frazier and Quinton Wright, respectively.

With the lead down to three, Jackson was climbing its way back in the game. However, Williamstown’s Parker Schramm had other ideas.

With time winding down in the first, Schramm pulled up from beyond the arc and nailed a buzzer-beating 3-ball to push the lead back up to six.

Schramm led all scorers with 16 points and either scored or assisted on 10 of his team’s 12 second-quarter points. He found success in getting the ball to Jayden Bryant, who was assisted on each of his four baskets by Schramm.

That offensive output plus great defensive play from Mike Coiner’s ‘Jackets helped push the halftime lead to 25-12.

The second half was more of the same for Williamstown, as other key contributions from Lynken Joy, Will Coiner and Carson Hill led to a lead that was never in danger.

Solid fourth quarter efforts from Jackson’s Lukas Horner, Christian Rutherford, Peyton Davis and Jaydon Fluharty were too late to make up the deficit, as coach Coiner’s Yellowjackets rolled to the sixth grade crown.

“It feels really good,” Coiner said of the win. We started this back in November. “The boys have worked really hard with every game, every practice.”

These two teams met earlier in the year with Williamstown coming out on top with a 43-39 win, so it was key for the ‘Jackets to take advantage of the larger court size at PHS’s Memorial Fieldhouse.

“It fits our boys a lot better when we get to a bigger court where we can get out and run,” Coiner said. “Jackson’s a very good team. They’re very well coached, and luckily, we had enough to get it done tonight.”
