No. 2 Crusaderettes rout No. 10 Notre Dame
CLARKSBURG — We’ve all heard the old adage, ‘Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships’.
But when it comes to No. 2 ranked Parkersburg Catholic (15-1) that ‘old’ adage is as ‘young’ as the senior-less Crusaderettes.
“We have a lot of respect for Notre Dame,” veteran PC head coach Marty Vierheller explained after watching his team rout the homestanding Irish by a 47-21 score. “They are a very, very good team.”
Words that could just as easily be used when describing Parkersburg Catholic.
Junior Madeline Huffman tallied a game-high 14 points and sophomore Aaliyah Brunny chipped in 13 points to lead the Columbia Blue and White to a season sweep of Notre Dame.
Conversely, Notre Dame – now 11-5 on the season – had only three players score with only senior Taylor Martino reaching double figures (12 points).
“It was kind of like ‘defense by committee’ on her (Martino),” said Vierheller. “We do a good job of helping one another on defense and we just made sure that we were conscious of where she (Martino) was at all times.”
PC jumped out to a 15-5 advantage after the game’s first eight minutes as Huffman bucketed eight of her game-high points while Brunny chipped in five.
The Crusaderettes continued to pour it on their hosts in the second quarter building a 24-6 lead before Martino’s triple with 43 seconds remaining before the intermission sliced the margin to 15, 24-9, heading into the locker rooms.
Both teams struggled offensively to open the third quarter until PC’s defense took over and helped the guests score six straight points in a 30 second span to build a 32-12 lead with 2:33 left on the clock.
“Defensively, we still have some things that we need to clean up, but I like where we are,” added the Crusaderettes’ head coach.
Notre Dame would get no closer while both teams emptied the benches for the final quarter of play.
“It was a good win for us tonight,” added Vierheller. “Sometimes we play too unselfish and pass up shots that we should be taking in order to get our teammates in the game. But, I’ll take that kind of unselfishness every night if we can continue to win.”
