PARKERSBURG — Kionte Peacock had a career-high 30 points, as Parkersburg outscored seventh-ranked Cabell Midland 20-14 in the final quarter pulling off the upset 64-60 Wednesday.

With the win, Parkersburg (3-11) snapped a six-game losing streak. Head coach Jeff Mennillo spoke highly of his team’s grit-n-grind attitude.

“This win is a big deal and it speaks volumes about the kids in our locker room,” Mennillo said. “We were 2 -11 and yet they come to work every day and trying to get over the hump.”

Peacock scored nine out of the 14 in the first quarter, going 3 for 4 from deep. Sam Potts and Dylan Shaver both chipped in with two. Cabell Midland’s Chandler Schmidt made two 3s, showed off his range with a deep 3, making it a 14-14 score after one.

Schmidt, Tanner Paugh, and Carter Stone all kicked off the second with three as Parkersburg outscored Cabell Midland 19-16 in the second.

Potts and Peacock had a similar stat sheet during the second with five points, one from 3, to go with Jacob McKnight’s four baskets.

Cabell Midland’s Jake Edwards missed a putback in the final seconds as PHS took a 33-30 lead into the half.

Peacock put back his own rebound to open up the third for Parkersburg, but Cabell Midland went on a 6-2 scoring drive with points from Ty Strum, Schmidt, and Tyler Straub.

Straub scored four more points later in the quarter. Shaver put up four points for PHS, as he finished with seven points and was 3 for 4 from the foul line.

Parkersburg struggled in the third, getting outscored 16-11, as Peacock put up five points, one from 3.

During the final seconds, Schmidt clanked a 3 as Cabell Midland went into the final period with at 46-44 lead.

Down seven with seven left to go in the fourth, Peacock showed up when it mattered the most, by scoring 11 points in the fourth, nine coming from 3.

“Coach and the team was hyping me up, we were hyping each other up, it felt good,” Peacock said

Parkersburg played good team defense, as the Knights used up almost a minute of game time looking for a shot before Cabell Midland coach Rick Chaffin called a timeout with 2:01 left.

Coming back from a timeout, Jake Johnson intercepted a Strum pass and took it the house making it 56-55.

The Knights took back the lead thanks to a three-point play by Schmidt, but was immediately answered by Peacock’s 3 at 1:10 giving Parkersburg the lead for good, 61-58.

Schmidt had the opportunity to make the game closer, but went 0 for 2 at the foul line, and McKnight was immediately fouled by after pulling down a rebound.

Those two misses were the only ones for Schmidt, who went 7 for 9.

“We tell our players that they need to look for a way to make a play, and I thought Jake’s steal and Jacob’s rebound changed the game for us and put us back in the lead,” coach Mennillo said.

Up next, Parkersburg will hit the road playing another top-10 team in triple-A, eighth-ranked Woodrow, Wilson Friday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
