Fort Frye girls claim PVC title

BEVERLY — Morgan Borich fittingly was the game’s leading scorer on senior night.

As the only final-year player on the Fort Frye roster, the 5-foot-10 wing tallied 13 points to lead the Cadets to a 52-23 triumph over visiting Shenandoah Monday night in Pioneer Valley Conference girls’ basketball action.

With the victory, FFHS, 13-2 overall and 7-0 in the PVC, clinched its 10th straight league championship.

“It’s good to see Morgan get a win tonight,” said Fort head coach Dan Liedtke. “I thought she played real well.

“She’s put so much into this game. Whatever she gets out of the game, she deserves. I’ll tell you that. I’ve been fortunate to have her as a player.”

Hannah Archer added 12 points, while Lexie Huck and Kiersten Kesselring netted nine and eight, respectively, for the winners. Liv Schneider and Karlee Ross each chipped in with five.

“This is a pretty tough team to zero in on one player,” Liedtke said. “And, that actually opens it up for Morgan better, too.”

Defensively, the Cadets limited the Zeps to four single-digit quarters. The visitors from Sarahsville only made nine field goals in the contest.

“Our defense was right on,” Liedtke said. “It was energizing our scoring.

“We’ve been kind of struggling here of late. I think a lot of it is because of the layoffs we’ve been having between games. But I saw tonight where we’re starting to come out of that. As the game went on, we got a lot more involved and intense. That was really good to see.”

Shenandoah (8-8) was led by Reagan Flood’s eight points. Dany Dimmerling added six; Brooklyn May five; and Kenzie Lynch and Kendall Mackie, two apiece.

Sparked by Borich’s six first-quarter points, the Fort staked itself to a 14-2 advantage. After the Cadets started the game with a 10-0 run, they never looked back. Flood scored the Zeps only 2-pointer late in the stanza.

In the second quarter, both schools struggled on offense with each scoring just 4 points. At halftime, FFHS led 18-6.

Early in the third quarter, Shenandoah had a 5-2 run and was able to reduce the deficit to single digits (20-11). Lynch scored one deuce and May had a bucket and bonus freebie during the Zeps surge.

But Fort came back, was able to regain its double-digit cushion, and led 29-15 going into the fourth quarter.

In the final period, Archer (8), Huck (5), and Borich (5) combined for 18 points as the Cadets cruised home with the league crown.

“We were starting to click at the offensive end with the passing and driving,” Liedtke said.
