PARKERSBURG — Morgantown and Parkersburg South were a pair of 1-3 clubs which meet Thursday evening inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center with each program needing a victory.

When the final horn went off, it was the Patriots of head coach Ed Davis who improved to 2-3 following a hard-fought 59-54 victory.

Sierra Hays tallied 11 of her game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter. In the third stanza, it was Erin Williams who pumped in 11 of her 14 counters, which included 10 straight points, in the period. Despite Makenna Winans getting into early foul trouble for the Patriots, she came through with eight counters in the pivotal third stanza en route to a dozen points.

“I mean it’s a nice win for us,” admitted coach Davis, whose squad trailed 30-24 at intermission but led 46-45 entering the final eight minutes.

“We’ve lost a couple games that were similar to that earlier and we couldn’t close it out in the fourth quarter. I think the effort was outstanding and I think they showed a lot of heart tonight. We got contributions from a lot of different people.”

Kaitlyn Ammons led head coach Jason White’s Mohigans with a team-high 23-point night, but she was held scoreless in the fourth.

After Ammons drained a 3 from a Cat Wassick assist with 2:46 left in the third, it appeared PSHS might be in trouble down 41-32.

However, Williams came to the rescue. She answered Ammons’ 3 with one of her own and after Ammons scored on the block from a Kerrington Peasak feed, Williams went back to work. The junior Patriot then drained another 3. She was fouled on the play and converted the four-point play. With 1:29 left in the third, Jordan Huffman had a skip pass across the court to find an open Williams, who hit from deep once again to get the Patriots to within one at 43-42.

A putback by Winans was followed by a Hays deuce to give the hosts a 46-45 cushion entering the fourth.

The affair proceeded to be tied at 46, 47 and 50-all before Hays connected on her second trifecta of the fourth — this one from the top of the key — to put Parkersburg South ahead for good, 53-50, with 2:42 to play.

Morgantown, which plays Wednesday at Brooke, managed to cut the deficit back to one twice more. The final time came on a running kiss in the lane by Maddie Seman, who finished with 16 points.

However, the Mohigans didn’t score again and Hays sealed the victory by hitting 3 of 4 from the charity stripe.

Coach White’s team shot 20 of 40 for the game, but were plagued by 26 turnovers. Wassick finished with seven points, six assists and two steals while tying Sydni Clawges for game-high rebounding honors with a dozen each.

Huffman tallied just three points, but grabbed a team-high seven caroms and also had four assists and a game-high four steals.

PSHS will have a week off before Logan (Ohio) invades the ROAC next Thursday.
