AAA: Capital 48,

Hedgesville 14

Kerry Martin Jr. threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score as Capital topped visiting Hedgesville 48-14 in the Class AAA quarterfinals at University of Charleston Stadium.

Capital (11-1), the No. 3 seed, plays at No. 2 Spring Valley (12-0) in next weekend’s semifinal round. The date and time will be determined Sunday.

Martin completed 19 of 29 passes for 274 yards, finding brother Kerion Martin with a 34-yard scoring toss and Shawn James with a 7-yarder. Kerry Martin also carried 10 times for 104 yards and a TD. Kalai Clark had a pair of scoring runs for Capital.

Hedgesville (7-5), the No. 11 seed, fell behind 23-0 at halftime while being limited to 43 total yards. Eagles quarterback Hunter Coe hit on 12 of 30 passes for 191 yards, including a 74-yard TD heave to Owie Ash on the game’s final play. Coe also ran for a score.

AA: Weir 63,

Nicholas County 43

SUMMERSVILLE — Donavan Kirby ran 28 times for 235 yards and four touchdowns as Class AA No. 12 Weir took down No. 4 Nicholas County 63-43 in the Class AA state quarterfinals.

Sebastian Spencer carried seven times for 129 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Komoroski in the closing seconds of the first half to put the Red Riders (10-2) ahead 28-14 at the break.

The Grizzlies (11-1) scored on the first series of the second half, but could not get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Weir will visit Fairmont Senior in the semifinals next weekend.

AA: Bluefield 35, Keyser 0

BLUEFIELD — Late offensive fireworks was but the icing on the cake after a shutout performance by the Bluefield defensive unit during a 35-0 win over Keyser here Saturday at Mitchell Stadium.

The Bluefield defense bent to the tune of 234 rushing yards allowed to the Golden Tornado (9-3), but kept Keyser out of the end zone for all four quarters.

Bluefield quarterback Chandler Cooper passed for 64 yards, including a freakishly deflected 4-yard touchdown pass salvaged by Jamere Edwards and a 47-yard TD bomb to Ronnel Blevins that broke the tight game open late in the third period.

Bluefield got a 4-yard scoring run in the fourth period from JJ Davis, who led the Beavers with 154 yards on 13 carries.

Edwards, who rushed for 114 yards on 11 attempts, added scoring runs of 4 and 37 yards in the final period. Arnold Martin rushed for 84 yards on 10 carries for Bluefield (11-1).
