A: Sherman 44,

Parkersburg Catholic 8

SETH — Sherman High had three players gain over 100 yards rushing as Tommy Harper and J.T. Hensley hit pay dirt twice and Seth Rinchich once as Sherman rolled to a Class A opening round win over Parkersburg Catholic on a Muddy Zontini Field.

The Crusaders had no defensive answer for Sherman’s rushing attack and the Tide held their opponent to minus-11 rushing yards in the first half.

Hensley, the Tide quarterback, notched an interception in the game and a fumble recovery. The win marked the first playoff win in nine years for the Boone County School.

AA: Mount View 34, Ritchie County 14

PRINCETON — Mount View scored 21 points in the final four minutes on Friday night to rally past Ritchie County for a 34-14 win in the first round of the Class A playoffs at Hunnicutt Field in Princeton.

Senior Elijah Barner scored the three late touchdowns for the third-seeded Golden Knights (10-1). Barner and fellow senior Tayyoun Powell eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing for the season on successive runs late in the third quarter.

Ritchie County (7-4) got touchdowns by Garrett Owens and Zach Cline, and Kayden Proccina broke through the View line and tackled the ball carrier in the end zone for a safety and a 14-13 Ritchie County lead with 3:47 left the third quarter.

On fourth and 10 at the Rebel 19, Mount View quarterback Jesse Rose completed a swing pass to Barner for a first down at the RC 8. After an illegal participation penalty against the visitors, Barner burst up the middle for the go-ahead points, as Powell added the extra points on a run.

Junior Jasauni Sizemore picked a Rebel pass and returned to the Ritchie 29 with 2:14 remaining. On the fourth play of the series, Barner broke a 19-yard run to extend the advantage to 28-14 following Justin Haggerty’s second conversion kick.

Mount View recovered a fumble with less than a minute showing and tacked on the final points on Barner’s 4-yard run.

Ohio Playoffs: Fort Frye 41, Northmor 23

PATASKALA, Ohio — For the second time in three years, Fort Frye will play for a regional championship.

The Cadets defeated Northmor, 41-23, in an Ohio Division VI, Region 23 semifinal Friday night at Watkins Memorial High School and will take on Shadyside next Friday at a site to be determined with a state semifinal berth on the line.

The Cadets trailed 8-0 early but scored 34 unanswered points to put the game out of reach.

Tyler Fisher and Evan Schob led the way for the Cadets. Fisher carried 21 times for 108 yards and two touchdowns while Schob took 22 totes for 103 yards. Brian Adkins added 66 yards on eight carries and also caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from Tate Engle, who finished 7 for 13 for 135 yards and rushed for two 1-yard touchdowns.

Fort Frye’s other touchdown came on a 13-yard run by Zane Greenleaf.

Northmor was led by Conor Becker who rushed 18 times for 61 yards. Hunter Mariotti threw a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to Cole Dille and Chris Bood.

AAA: Capital 42,

Morgantown 0

CHARLESTON — Senior quarterback Kerry Martin Jr. threw four touchdown passes, two to Chance Knox, as No. 3 seed Capital earned a 42-0 victory over Morgantown in the Class AAA playoffs at University of Charleston Stadium.

Martin completed his first eight passes for 124 yards and a pair of touchdowns, finding Knox on a 28-yard rainbow and running back Deshaun James for a 25-yarder on a pass in the flat.

Capital (10-1) led 28-0 at halftime. Martin ended 14 of 22 for 195 yards.

For No. 14 seed Morgantown (5-6), Hunter Finn intercepted a pair of passes. The Mohigans were held to 155 total yards. Cameron Rice hit on 7 of 20 throws for 105 yards with two interceptions.

AAA: Huntington 14,

Cabell Midland 7

HUNTINGTON — Huntington High’s defense held Cabell Midland to 188 total yards and the No. 7 Highlanders (8-3) defeated 10th-seeded Cabell Midland 14-7 Friday night in a Class AAA playoff opener at Bob Sang Field.

The Highlanders took a 7-0 lead on Brocton Blair’s first touchdown of the season, a 4-yard run with 2:02 left in the first quarter to cap a 17-play, 84-yard drive that took 7:46. Huntington scored again on Diallo Mitchell’s 39-yard sprint around left end with 6:43 remaining in the second quarter to boost the lead to 14-0.

Cabell Midland (6-5) scored on Griffin Adkins’ 29-yard run with 6:55 left in the game.

Blair, who had not run the ball all season until Friday night, led the Highlanders with 76 yards on 15 carries. He also made 17 tackles from his linebacker position.

AAA: Spring Valley 77, Spring Mills 7

SPRING VALLEY — No. 2 seed Spring Valley raced to a 56-7 halftime lead an routed No. 15 Spring Mills 77-7 Friday in a Class AAA playoff opener at Timberwolves Field.

The score was tied 7-7 after a pair of touchdown passes – 37 yards from the Timberwolves’ Will Adkins to Nate Ellis, and 67 yards from the Cardinals’ Keon Padmore-Johnson to Rohan Parchment. Spring Valley (11-0) scored the next 70 points to set up next week’s quarterfinal home game with Huntington.

Graeson Malashevich scored four touchdowns, two receiving and one each rushing and on a 62-yard punt return. The senior receiver/running back/quarterback/returner/defensive back ran for 136 yards on eight carries and caught three passes for 76 yards.

Owen Chafin ran 12 times for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

Spring Mills finished 5-6.

AA: Nicholas County 41, Petersburg 10

SUMMERSVILLE — Jacob O’Dell rushed for 259 yards and three touchdowns as Class AA No. 4 Nicholas County defeated No. 3 Petersburg 41-10 in a Class AA first round playoff game Friday night.

The Grizzlies controlled the game in the trenches, notching five sacks and forcing Petersburg quarterback Jacob Hartman into two interceptions.

Nicholas quarterback Jared Sagraves completed 4 of 5 passes for 96 yards, tossing two touchdowns to Luke LeRose and another to Kyle Groves.

Peyton Sindledecker led the way for the Vikings, catching seven passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.

Petersburg ends its season at 7-3, while Nicholas County improves to 11-0 and awaits the winner of Saturday’s Poca/Weir matchup.

AA: Robert C. Byrd 35, Shady Spring 15

Robert C Byrd punched its ticket to the state quarterfinals with a 35-15 victory over the Shady Spring Tigers.

The duo of Ghovan Davidson and Jeremiah King were too much for the Tigers, as Davidson toted the rock 23 times for 220 yards and a pair of scores while King rushed 17 times for 155 yards and a pair of touchdowns while also hauling in a 39-yard pass for a score. On the defensive side, RCB’s Andrew Sponaugle intercepted Shady Spring’s Drew Clark three different times.

Shady Spring tailback Tyler Bragg led the charge for the Tigers, scoring from 81 yards out in the second quarter to cut the Eagle lead to 14-7 before RCB took control with a three unanswered touchdowns in the second half to pull away.

Byrd advances to play rival Bridgeport, which beat the Eagles 41-35 in an instant classic earlier in the season.

AA: Bridgeport 49, Frankfort 13

Third-seeded Bridgeport rolled past 14th-seeded Frankfort. Jake Bowen ran the ball 23 times for 257 yards and three touchdowns in the victory while D’Andre Hallaway added 109 receiving yards and a score.

Hallaway’s 28 yard touchdown catch from Devin Vandergrift gave the Indians an early 7-0 lead.

Frankfort’s Dalton Pollock answered with a 45-yard touchdown run to make the score 7-6 late in the first quarter.

From that point on, the Indians dominated. Bowen scored all three of his touchdowns in the second quarter, including a 87-yard dash down the right sideline to give the Indians a 28-6 halftime lead.

Vandergrift added two touchdowns with his legs while also tossing a 9-yard score to Carson Winkie in the second half. Chandler Rhodes scored from 45 yards for the Falcons in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late as the Indians advanced to the second round and ended the Falcons’ season.

BHS will host Robert C. Byrd next week in the second round. The Indians defeated the Eagles 41-35 in the regular season.

AA: Bluefield 56, Oak Hill 7

BLUEFIELD — Class AA No. 2 Bluefield rolled up 300 yards of offense and allowed No. 15 Oak Hill 75 net yards as the defending Class AA champion Beavers rolled past the Red Devils 56-7 in their first round game at Mitchell Stadium on Friday night.

Bluefield (10-1) scored less than a minute into the game on a 58-yard dash by JJ Davis. Davis was the leading rusher of the night, with 94 yards — on three carries.

Arnold Martin had 54 yards and a pair of touchdowns on four carries, and Jamere Edwards gained 39 yards and a touchdown on four totes for Bluefield. Quarterback Chandler Cooper was 2-for-5 passing for 49 yards and threw a scoring toss to Davis. Cooper also scored on a 1-yard keeper on his only carry.

Markeice Neal made the score 21-0 in the first quarter on a 25-yard interception return. Tony Webster recovered one of Oak Hill’s two fumbles and scored the Beavers’ final touchdown late in the third quarter.

Oak Hill (7-4) lost senior quarterback Khori Bass on its first offensive play. Abe Farrow was the Red Devils’ leading rusher with 46 yards on 11 rushes. He scored his team’s only touchdown with 3:28 left in the contest.

A continuous clock was used after the first quarter and the remaining three periods were shortened to eight minutes.

A: Midland Trail 14, Tucker County 2

Morgan Ferris rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries to power No. 2 Midland Trail to a 14-2 defeat of No. 15 Tucker County Friday on Roger Eades Field at Patriot Stadium in Hico.

Reserve sophomore quarterback Christopher Vines completed two timely passes and had a 5-yard touchdown run for the Patriots. Vince was playing in relief of starting quarterback Austin Isaacs, who departed the game late in the first quarter with a high ankle sprain.

Tucker County got its only points when Seth Cangley tackled Vines in the end zone for a safety early in the second quarter.

Jonathon Stark logged three interceptions for the Midland Trail defense.

Midland Trail (11-0) advances to meet No. 7 Sherman, which beat Parkersburg Catholic Friday.

Tucker County finishes 6-5.
