Williamstown volleyball beats Warren

’Jackets win in four sets on Senior Night

WILLIAMSTOWN — Bethany Arnold was a force at the net on Senior Night.

The Williamstown middle hitter had a single-match career-high 26 kills as the Yellowjackets outslugged visiting Warren, 25-15, 21-25, 25-22, and 25-23, in prep volleyball action Monday evening.

Arnold’s previous high was 24 kills against Parkersburg Catholic.

“We do rely on Beth a lot,” said Williamstown head coach Rachelle Cole. “We moved Kayla Bauman opposite her, and she’s a pretty heavy hitter also. But the other three — Brittney (Hooper), Skyler (Chancellor), and Faith (Hoosier) — they’re playing exceptional now, too. I don’t want to take anything away from them, either.”

Bauman added 14 kills, Hoosier 11, Chancellor eight, and Hooper six for the Yellowjackets, who improved their record to 23-9-2 overall.

“Williamstown was hitting the ball well tonight,” said Warren boss Michelle Tyo.

Williamstown freshman setter Lakyn Joy finished with 37 assists, while libero Gracie Graham had 21 digs. Jillian Modesitt chipped in with 15 digs, and Chloe Hooper had eight.

Warren, which dropped its third straight match, fell to 13-9 on the season. The Warriors were led by Abby Gilliand’s 14 kills. Madison Foy and Kaylee Ullman added eight apiece.

Warren setter Victoria Lewis was credited with 75 assists and 14 digs, while libero Diamond Decker had 26 digs. Foy chipped in with 16 digs.

“I feel like that we were evenly matched,” said Warriors boss Michelle Tyo. “They (Jackets) just showed up tonight.

“I was hoping tonight that we would turn it around to get us ready for Wednesday. There’s a lot on the line then.”

The Warriors are scheduled to host Vinton County in an OHSAA sectional opener at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Williamstown never trailed in the opening set, and led 9-1 at one point. Capping the 10-point victory, Arnold delivered a kill.

Warren bounced back in the second set, which was tight for most of the way. Foy’s kill was point 25.

“We started to hit well, but their defense just picked up everything that we seemed to hit at them,” Tyo said.

The third and fourth sets were nail-biters from start to finish with the Yellowjackets prevailing in both. Arnold’s block sealed the win in the third and her kill clinched both the fourth set and match.

“It was very intense,” Cole said. “We knew going in that Warren was a really good team.

“We decided we had to work on the things that are going to build us up going into the tournament. We focused on not making mistakes, and I think we did a pretty good job at minimizing the mistakes tonight.”

Williamstown is slated to play at Ravenswood in a Little Kanawha Conference match tonight.
