Trippett finishes on top at MSACs

PHS girls finish as runner-up

ONA — Parkersburg High School’s Madison Trippett topped the field here Wednesday evening at Cabell Midland High School during the annual Mountain State Athletic Conference cross country championships.

The junior Trippett finished the course in 18 minutes and 21 seconds to earn the title of MSAC female cross country athlete of the year. She helped the Big Reds to a runner-up finish behind Cabell Midland, 31-56.

“I felt strong all the way through,” Trippett said. “(The finish) surprised me. You never know what to expect so you just have to run your hardest no matter what.”

Parkersburg’s Olivia Collett had a strong showing, finshing third with a time of 20 minutes and 8 seconds. Two other Big Reds cracked the top 20 thanks to Emily Cunningham (14th, 21:57) and Erin Schumacher (17th, 22:23).

There was no stopping boys champ Chris Barbera of Woodrow Wilson. He crossed the finish line with a victorious time of 16 minutes and 20 seconds. The Flying Eagles nipped the PHS boys for runner-up honors, 63-67, but once again host Cabell Midland (52) was too strong and won the MSAC team title.

Freshman Franklin Angelos paced the Big Reds with a sixth-place effort, finishing the course in 17 minutes and 15 seconds. Keegan Barnette was just three seconds behind his teammate and placed eighth while PHS’ Benjamin Lake grabbed 10th with a time of 17:26.

Anthony Bradford also had a top 20 showing for the Big Reds, coming in 18th place with a time of 18:04.
