Prep Football Roundup

RAVENSWOOD at

DODDRIDGE COUNTY

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Doddridge County 20, Ravenswood 3

RHS (2-4) results: d. Wahama, 42-0; d. Webster County, 31-16; lost to Williamstown, 55-19; lost to Sherman, 28-3; lost to Ritchie County, 32-14; lost to Racine Southern, 35-19

DCHS (6-0) results: d. South Harrison, 52-14; d. Tyler Consolidated, 62-43; d. Calhoun County, 48-0; d. Ritchie County, 41-12; d. Wirt County, 56-0; d. Gilmer County, 57-7

Key RHS players: LB/FB Luke Jackson, QB/S Max Hilton, WR/S Sam Sturm

Key DCHS: RB/DB Hunter America, OL/DL Max Cook, WR/LB Brad Zellny

Keys to victory: Ravenswood must stop the running game of Doddridge County. Bobby Burnside’s team brings an elite rushing attack to the matchup, one the kind the Red Devils haven’t been able to stop all season long. One featuring a running back similar to Williamstown’s Donathan Taylor, who ran 12 times for 158 yards against Ravenswood on Sept. 14.

The Bulldogs’ Hunter America hasn’t been held under 100 yards once this season.

The junior’s giant offensive line, featuring Max Cook, plans to keep America’s streak going against the Red Devils.

ST. MARYS at

MAGNOLIA

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: St. Marys 35, Magnolia 6

SMHS (2-4) results: lost to Scott, 21-14; lost to Roane County, 28-17; lost to Ritchie County, 24-21; d. Calhoun County, 42-14; lost to Williamstown, 48-14; d. Wirt County, 43-0

MHS (4-3) results: d. Sherman, 24-0; lost to Williamstown, 20-8; lost to Shadyside, 50-20; d. River (Ohio), 22-8; d. Frontier, 28-6; d. Monroe Central, 35-0; lost to Columbus Crestview, 36-21

Key SMHS players: RB/LB Slade Amos, OL/DE Riley Boley, K Joey Sanchez

Key MHS players: QB/S Pat Mirandy, RB/DB Jason Beisel, OL/DL Jakob Burrows

Keys to victory: St. Marys has dominated this rivalry the past three seasons. A fact not foreign to the Blue Eagles, and one they hope to rectify this season. Strength and size are the biggest reasons Dave Chapman’s team walks out with a victory Friday night.

RIPLEY at

GREENBRIER EAST

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Did not play

Ripley (5-1) results: lost to Parkersburg South, 27-7; d. Buckhannon-Upshur, 27-12; d. Riverside, 34-30; d. Marietta, 35-21; d. Brooke, 42-14; d. Princeton, 40-18

Greenbrier East (4-2) results: d. James Monroe, 14-0; lost to Woodrow Wilson, 34-2; d. St. Albans, 41-7; lost to Bluefield, 62-7; d. Buckhannon-Upshur, 32-6; d. Alleghany, Va., 14-0

Key Ripley players: RB RJ Evans, FB Jeremy Harper, RB Dalton Myers

Keys to victory: Since a season-opening loss to Parkersburg South, Ripley has been on a 5-0 spurt to jump up into the No. 7 spot in the WVSSAC Class AAA ratings.

But the Vikings will be on the road on Friday at No. 12-ranked Greenbrier East, which has only been tripped up by No. 19 Woodrow Wilson and Bluefield, at No. 2 in Class AA.

Ripley rolled over visiting Princeton 40-18 last Friday, racking up 458 yards, but also giving up 269 through to air by the Tigers and also fumbling six times, although losing only two. Still, the Vikes after getting these things straightened out this week should keep on keeping on Friday at the expense of the Spartans.

RITCHIE COUNTY at WEBSTER COUNTY

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Webster County 25, Ritchie County 12

Ritchie County (4-2) results: d. Tyler Consolidated, 24-22; lost to Parkersburg Catholic, 32-28; d. Frontier, 28-13; d. St. Marys, 24-21; lost to Doddridge County, 41-12; d. Ravenswood, 32-14

Webster County (3-4) results: lost to Richwood, 46-36; lost to Ravenswood, 31-16; d. Tygarts Valley, 39-14; d. Greenbrier West, 26-29; lost to Mount View, 53-6; lost to Tyler Consolidated, 49-42; d, Meadow Bridge, 34-8

Key Ritchie County players: FB Zach Cline, RB Garrett Owens, TE Tatem McCloy, RB Tre Moss

Keys to victory: This should be a good one, although Ritchie County is probably the favorite, but not by much.

The Rebels though have been pretty consistent all the way through so far, whereas the host Highlanders have sort of been up and down throughout their seven outings.

Plus a plus for Ritchie Friday could be that the Rebels are coming off their bye week, so have had extra time to prepare for Webster County, as well as being state ranked at No. 13 in Class A and also having only lost to two other state-rated squads in No. 4 Doddridge County and No. 6 Parkersburg Catholic.

CALHOUN COUNTY at GILMER COUNTY

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Gilmer 26, Calhoun 14

CCHS (1-6) results: d. Wirt, 16-6; lost to Notre Dame, 28-8; lost to Doddridge, 48-0; lost to Tyler Consolidated, 47-6; lost to St. Marys, 42-24; lost to Clay-Battelle, 14-8; lost to P. Catholic, 46-6

GCHS (2-4) results: lost to Clay, 53-14; lost to Richwood, 37-0; d. Wirt, 20-14; lost to P. Catholic, 44-7; d. Hundred, 45-8; lost to Doddridge, 57-7

Key Calhoun players: QB Adam Parsons, RB Travis Richards, RB Jacob Persinger, WR Mason Bailey

Key Gilmer players: QB Ean Hamric, RB Joey Frame, WR Isaac Poole, WR Mikey Roy

Keys to victory: Two old LKC rivals will clash Friday night at Morris Stadium in what appears to be a tossup affair.

Calhoun hasn’t tasted a victory since week one versus Wirt County (16-6), while one of Gilmer’s two wins was against the Tigers (20-14).

Expect someone to step up and make a couple big plays to determine the outcome in this one. Special teams and costly turnovers could spell the difference.

FORT FRYE at

CALDWELL

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Fort Frye 33, Caldwell 0

FFHS (6-0) results: d. Belpre, 41-14; d. Northridge, 37-6; d. Waterford, 22-20; d. Monroe Central, 53-0; d. Frontier, 49-7; d. Barnesville, 42-20

CHS (5-2) results: lost to Buckeye Trail, 28-13; d. Eastern, 38-6; d. Tuscarawas Central Catholic, 46-19; d. Monroe Central, 26-0; lost to River, 32-8; d. Conotton Valley, 34-0; d. Frontier, 40-7

Key FFHS players: RB Tyler Fisher; RB/WR Brian Adkins; WR Brady Schilling

Key CHS players: QB Tanner DeVolld; RB Drew Ivey; RB Kaden Moore

Keys to victory: With both teams undefeated in Pioneer Valley Conference play, this game will have major PVC implications on the line. For Caldwell to take down perennial top dog Fort Frye, it will have to find a way to keep the three-headed rushing attack of Tyler Fisher, Evan Schob and Brian Adkins from taking over. Even then, the Cadets have other weapons in quarterback Tate Engle and wide receiver Brady Schilling that Caldwell will have to stop. If the Redskins can limit Fort Frye’s offense and get Drew Ivey rolling on the ground, they could hand the Cadets a rare conference loss. However, it won’t be an easy task as the Cadets are averaging 40.7 points scored and 11.2 points allowed per game.

MARIETTA at

NEW PHILADELPHIA

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: New Philadelphia 44, Marietta 14

MHS (4-3) results: d. Morgan, 41-0; d. Warren, 55-21; lost to Williamstown, 33-22; lost to Ripley, 35-21; lost to Parkersburg, 41-28; d. Shenandoah, 42-0; d. River View, 14-6

NPHS (3-4) results: lost to Turpin, 34-14; lost to Ravenna, 21-10; d. Northwest, 21-20; lost to St. Charles, 41-21; d. Canton Central Catholic, 38-21; d. Cambridge, 62-33; lost to Steubenville, 56-39

Key MHS players: QB Corbin Alkire; RB Chase Taylor; WR Tanner Stack

Key NPHS players: QB Baron May; WR Jent Joseph; WR Sam Zemis

Keys to victory: Both teams have been in some close games this season and Friday night could be no different. Look for Marietta to establish a balanced offensive attack with quarterback Corbin Alkire in the air and running backs Chase Taylor and Kory Science on the ground. The Quakers, however, are capable of going up and down the field with just about anybody, led by quarterback Baron May and receivers Jent Joseph and Sam Zemis. New Philly is in must-win mode and Marietta will need to limit mistakes and execute its gameplan to take them down.

VALLEY (WETZEL) at FRONTIER

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Valley Wetzel 37, Frontier 14

VHS (2-4) results: lost Tygarts Valley, 33-8; lost to Cameron, 48-6; lost to Clay-Battelle, 40-32; d. Beallsville, 32-12; lost to Parkersburg Catholic, 56-24; d. Hundred, 42-8

FHS (1-6) results: lost to Shenandoah, 60-14; d. Beallsville, 61-6; lost to Ritchie County, 28-13; lost to Cameron, 40-14; lost to Magnolia, 28-6; lost to Fort Frye, 49-7; lost to Caldwell, 40-7

Key VHS players: Eathan Fluharty (OL/DL), Abe Satterfield (WR), David Sell (RB)

Key FHS players: Logan Brookover (LB), Noah Barnhart (LB), Joel Lewis (RB), Eli Fickiesen (RB)

Keys to victory: Frontier is hoping to halt a five-game slide. If the Cougars can stop the run-oriented Lumberjacks, they’ve got a good chance to post a ‘W.’ The operative word is “if.”

BELPRE at LUCASVILLE VALLEY

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Lucasville Valley 41, Belpre 7

BHS (5-2) results: lost to Fort Frye, 42-14; lost to Trimble, 35-0; d. Miller, 36-19; d. Wahama. 41-22; d. Southern, 55-41; d. Federal Hocking, 41-8; d. South Gallia, 50-31

LVHS (2-4) results: lost to Portsmouth, 57-40; lost to Coal Grove, 21-20; d. Piketon, 44-6; lost to Raceland (Ky.), 60-28; d. Fairview (Ashland) (Ky.), 48-14; lost to Waverly, 35-28; lost to Portsmouth West, 29-6

Key BHS players: Jesse Collins (FB), Conner Baker (QB), Logan Adams (RB)

Key LVHS players: Andrew Shope (QB), Tanner Spradlin (WR), Gabe Streeter (RB)

Keys to victory: Belpre is riding a five-game winning streak, and knocking on the playoff door. The Golden Eagles are ranked 11 in OHSAA Division VI, Region 23. This is a must-win road game for BHS.

ROANE COUNTY at

LINCOLN

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Lincoln 43, Roane 30

RCHS (2-4) results: lost to Liberty Harrison, 42-22; lost to Lincoln County 37-6; d. St. Marys 28-17; d. Braxton County 40-14; lost to Nicholas County 39-0; lost to Clay County 34-22;

LHS (2-4) results: d. Braxton County 3-0; lost to Robert C. Byrd 35-6; lost to Liberty Harrison 43-0; lost to Nicholas County 41-6; d. East Fairmont 41-0; lost to Grafton 10-7;

Key RCHS players: QB Daniel Bush; RB/DB Isaac Ryan; RB/LB Austin Hawkins;

Key LHS players: QB/DE Patrick Bart; WR/S Camden Brown; RB/LB Hunter Moore;

Keys to victory: Both AA challengers will be looking to make their season record 3-4 by the end of this weekend’s duel in Shinnston. Roane was able to score some rushing TD’s in last weeks game against Clay County with junior running back Isaac Ryan and sophomore running back Austin Hawkins. Lincoln will have to adapt its line to shut down those threats when playing defensively. This is one that will go to the team that can hold the stronger line.

TYLER CONSOLIDATED at TOLSIA

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Last year’s result: Tyler Consolidated 48, Tolsia 14

TCHS (3-2) results: lost to Ritchie County, 24-22; lost to Doddridge County, 62-43; d. Calhoun County, 47-6; d. Wirt County 63-6; d. Webster County 49-42; lost to Williamstown 51-18;

THS (4-3) results: lost to Fairland (OH), 42-0; d. Buffalo, 36-6; lost to Lincoln County, 30-14; d. Westside, 48-18; d. Tug Valley, 44-36; lost to Mt. View, 6-0;

Key TCHS players: QB Griffin Phillips; RB/DB Mark Rucker; WR/DB Trey Pittman

Key THS players: WR Logan Roseberry; QB Cory Davis; WR/DB Trey Smith

Keys to victory: Tyler Consolidated continues its tour on the road with an away match against Tolsia. The Knights are coming off a hard-fought defeat against Williamstown last week. This week’s host Tolsia is entering its home field with a fresh loss of its own, 6-0, to No. 1 Mount View. Tyler Consolidated will be looking to utilize junior running back Mark Rucker and senior wide reciever Trey Pittman on the offense. Both made it to the end zone in the last week’s matchup.
