PARKERSBURG — Host Parkersburg South upped its record to 5-3 here Thursday evening inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center for head volleyball coach Becky Bennett as the Patriots swept an Ohio Valley Athletic Conference triangular from Morgantown and Warren.

The Warriors of head coach Michelle Tyo, who are now 4-3 and play Monday at Shenandoah, fell to the Patriots in the final match of the night 25-18 and 25-12.

Coach Bennett’s team handed the Mohigans (1-2) a 25-17 and 25-20 defeat to open things up as Warren knocked off Morgantown in the middle match by scores of 25-18, 20-25 and 25-23.

“The girls really came out with the drive to win,” said coach Bennett, who watched McKayla Kemp get five aces and Cassie Fink five kills versus Morgantown.

“They came out and were ready to go. We had some hiccups in that second game against Morgantown, but they never gave up and battled back and did really well.”

Morgantown led 8-0 to start the second set versus PSHS thanks to seven straight service tallies from Alayna Corwin, which included five aces. The hosts took their first lead at 12-11 with Lauren Somerville serving when Alana Brigner registered a kill.

The Mohigans, who received five kills from Jariely Reyes and 16 assists from Corwin, led for the final time at 18-17, but the Patriots went ahead for good at 19-18 when Jacqui Foggin put one to the floor with Rylee Harris serving.

Warren appeared to be in trouble down 22-19 in the third set against Morgantown, but a Victoria Lewis kill, a Jacey Barnes service point and then a quick set kill by Abby Gilliand tied it at 22-all. However, Abbey Paczek, who had eight kills, got her final of the match to make it 23-22 MHS. Gilliand, though, came up with a block against Emily Laskody to tie it and then she served out for the victory.

“South has a very good team this year,” said Warrior head coach Michelle Tyo, who watched libero Diamond Decker make 40 digs in the two matches. “We played with them the first set and then that second set I don’t know what happened. We got tired and they just played.

“I’ve been proud of what I’ve seen so far of them. When we show up to play we are a very good team. I hope they continue to grow and keep working to get better as a team.”

A run of six points by Barnes, which included an ace, had Warren up 8-4 versus South in set one, but Fink and Kemp took over at the net and by the time Brigner recorded a kill it was 15-11. Warrior Autumn Miller’s downed spike closed it to 16-14, but it was all Patriots after that as Foggin’s ace sealed the set.

In set two, when Catreena Shears put one to the floor that gave the Patriots a commanding 19-9 cushion. Morgan Young and Lewis, who had 11 assists, staved off two Patriot match points with kills, but Foggin ended it with a kill.

PSHS, which received 10 kills from Kemp as well as 10 digs by Emma Leach versus the Warriors, return to action Saturday morning at Parkersburg’s Snowball Invitational.
