PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg South scored two first-half goals for a 2-0 lead, but two minutes before resuming play in the second half Thursday evening, the Patriots’ boys soccer match versus visiting Warren at the Erickson All-Sports Facility was halted for two hours by several weather delays of lightning and thunder before being called off.

The shortened 2-0 win upped South’s record to 2-3-2, while the loss dropped the Warriors to 0-6 on the season.

The Patriot goals were tallied by senior Ben Atkinson with an assist from sophomore Nick Murphy just two minutes into the game and then by sophomore Evan Rose assisted by senior Nick Hawkins in the 28th minute of play.

South senior goalie Chase Hawkins had three keeper saves for the night and Warren senior goalkeeper Bryar Powell was credited with five saves.

“At times, we passed the ball well tonight,” said Warren head coach Ekrem Eksi. “But defensively now in our sixth game, we are still making very simple mistakes; it cost us a goal tonight and remains a problem for us.

“But we have a long way to go yet, and hopefully we will get it together and start winning because I still have confidence that this group eventually will make things happen for us.”

For South head coach Eric Stump, “that was the longest weather delay I can remember,” he said. “It felt like I was in the locker room for 10 hours.”

On the first half, which turned out to be all of the game, “we came out strong,” said Stump. “We had good ball movement, were able to get a quick goal, built up the momentum and just kept pushing from there.”

Goal No. 2 came about, said Stump, when “we were basically able to win the ball at midfield, then push it out and up, and through physical play and good teamwork, we were able to get the second goal shortly thereafter.”

Overall, added Stump, “things are progressing in the program in the direction we want.”
