BELPRE — After a wild and wooly first half, host Belpre settled down in the last 24 minutes in outdoing Southern as the Golden Eagles knocked the Tornadoes from the unbeaten ranks Friday night with a 55-41 win, pushing Belpre over the .500 mark at 3-2.

The scoring started early with Southern (4-1) jumping out to a 7-0 lead, that Belpre closed to within 7-6 at 4:51 of the first quarter on a Connor Baker 28-yard TD toss to Walker Feick before taking a 14-7 lead at 1:26 of the first on a Jesse Collins three-yard run and his two-point conversion run.

But the first quarter was more from done yet as Belpre’s Logan Adams picked up a Southern fumble at the Eagles’ 34 and raced 66 yards to score at 1:09 to push his team ahead 21-7.

Southern answered right back though on a 65-yard gallop to paydirt at 19.3 seconds by Trey McNickle, only to watch Adams dash 21 yards to score as time ran out to put Belpre ahead at 28-13.

In the second stanza, Southern outscored Belpre 20-7 with Belpre’s lone points coming on a Baker 1-yard run as the Eagles led by only a 35-33 margin at halftime.

Belpre managed to knot the score at 41-all going to the fourth quarter, where it did everything it had to do to keep Southern at bay — making first downs when it needed to the most and also styming the Tornadoes’ offense to keep them off the scoreboard.

Collins moved Belpre ahead at 48-41 in the fourth with a nine-yard TD run, banging his way through into the end zone at 10:58, then got the clincher by muscling eight yards to paydirt with just 1:08 left.
