Crusaders pull away to beat South Harrison, 36-21
PARKERSBURG — Behind by 13-0 early in the second quarter didn’t daze Parkersburg Catholic as the host Crusaders tallied the next four out of five touchdowns to keep its season-opening win streak intact by besting South Harrison 36-21 at Stadium Field Friday night to go 3-0.
PCHS plays again at 7 p.m. next Friday at Wirt County, while the Hawks dropped to 0-3.
But it took South Harrison just two plays from scrimmage to grab a quick 6-0 lead as Brenton Barnette raced 67 yards to paydirt at 11:01 of the first quarter.
Late in the first stanza, a three-yard Catholic punt put the Hawks in prime scoring position at the Crusader 20 and two plays into the second period, Jaren Robinson ran in from eight yards out at 11:18 as South Harrison stretched its lead to 13-0.
But on the Crusaders’ next possession, Ty Sturm and Jeb Boice basically powered PCHS downfield by biting off big chunks of ground, ending with Sturm’s three-yard TD dash at 2:34 of the second to narrow the gap to 13-6.
Not done yet for the first half however, Catholic recovered its second of five fumble recoveries in the game on the ensuing kickoff return at the SH 46, and Sturm broke loose up the middle and bolted 45 yards to score at 2:09, then ran in for a two-point conversion and a lead at 14-13 that the Crusaders would never relinquish.
To start the second half, PCHS recovered an onside kick at its 48, followed by a Sturm 35-yard run and a 17-yard run by Boice into the end zone at 11:22 for a 20-13 lead at the 11:22 mark.
From the SH 1 in the fourth, Boice took a pitch left to score, then Xavier Collie hit Sturm with a two-point conversion pass for a 28-13 advantage with 11:05 to play.
After Landon McFadden scrambled his way 35 yards for a Hawk TD with 8:01 left, Catholic responded with a 30-yard scoring scamper with just 2:35 to go.
For the game, Sturm rolled up 225 infantry yards and Boice added 154.
“We shot ourselves in the foot a few times early on,” said Catholic head coach Lance Binegar. “We kind of got down on ourselves for a while, but what our game is we’re just going to wear you down and power over top of you, and that’s when we took the lead.
“We don’t do anything fancy or surprise anybody with a trick play. We just do what we need to do.”
