Charley Taylor nets two goals to Patriots win over Big Reds

PARKERSBURG — The first three goals Saturday night belonged to Parkersburg South and the visiting Patriot girls went on to register a 3-1 soccer win over host Parkersburg High as they swept the regular-season series with the Big Reds 2-0.

Eight to 10 minutes into the match, South was getting a lot of chances to score. But PHS held them off for a while. After a big-time stop by Big Red Jennifer Morris though at 22:00, the Patriots finally got on the board at 15:55 by Charley Taylor right in front of the mat with an assist from Riley Pigott.

It was still 1-0 in the second half until Taylor tallied again at the 36:59 mark with a shot off PHS goalie Isabel Lynch and into the net, then Callie Leasure tacked on South goal No. 3 at 22:17 that bounced off the leaping Lynch back over her head into the goal.

The Big Reds (2-6) got their goal with just 8:36 to play when Sophia Thompson turned a corner kick into a score.

For South, now still unbeaten at 8-0-2, “PHS put a little pressure on us in the first half,” said Patriot head coach Ron Bucholtz. “But we finally found the goal and in the second half, our girls obviously took control as we were much better possessing the ball.”

For PHS head coach Brad Morris, “that was a tough game, and I would consider South probably a top-5 team in the state. However compared to the first game we played them (a 5-0 loss), this was a completely-different matchup. We played good soccer, but really couldn’t get much of any good, clear shots on goal for quite a while.”
