South netters focused in 2018
Patriots return five seniors
PARKERSBURG –Parkersburg South’s volleyball team is entering the 2018 season with a fresh mentality and a group of five seniors who are focused on getting the job done.
“We have a pretty experienced varsity crew coming back in.” said head coach Becky Bennett.
Last year the Patriots’ team made it to sectionals before falling off for the season, and this year the varsity team has been hard at work training to possibly improve on their seasons outcome.
To help guide this year’s effort the team elected Jacqui Foggin and Rylee Harris to be the team captains and both seniors share the same positive vision going into the start of their last season with the team.
“We’re going to do a lot better than we did last year,” said the senior captain Foggin.
“We have strong players and a strong coach. Not that we didn’t last year but this year we have hard practices, good drills, and we’re ready.”
A big part of this year’s team compared to last season is how the players have bonded in practice. The captain Harris has been playing volleyball since elementary school and has been a part of the Patriots team now for all four years of her high school career. That team experience has helped her notice how close they have become this season in practice.
“This year we’re all really close.” said Harris. “Every other year we’ve been kind of close but this year we’re all close friends. From the varsity, to the JV, to the freshmen team. So I think that’s going to help us a lot this year.”
Their first match up will be played today at John Marshall and the Patriot coaches as well as their varsity team believe they are capable of starting the season off with a win.
“I think they’ll do just fine.” said coach Bennett. “If we play the way we know we should play and the way we can play it shouldn’t be a problem.”
Part of that belief stems from the how the players have been working at practice with conditioning and practicing their game.
“We’ve worked really hard in practice.” said Foggin. “Practices have been harder. We’re not doing conditioning so much as doing conditioning with drills. So we always have a volleyball in our hands we’re always doing something to prepare. This year we’re really trying to encourage team work. We went to a team bonding thing at OVU. It was a low ropes course and we’re planning on having a little camp out together too. So we’re really focusing on the team this year.”
With their first match right on the horizon head coach Bennett added, “The overall goal is to always work on improving the skills, the plays, everything and then obviously making it to states.”
“So far we’ve done a lot better.” said Foggin. “Our mentality has really been the key.”
