Post 15 Legion stays alive with walk-off win
Morris goes deep, Batten gets big RBI
ASHEBORO, N.C. — Hayden Morris picked the perfect time to launch his first home run of the summer and Jordan Batten delivered a two-out walk-off RBI single here Thursday afternoon to lift Parkersburg Post 15 to a 3-2 victory versus Wilmington Post 10 in an elimination game of the American Legion Baseball Southeast Regional Tournament at McCrary Park.
With Parkersburg facing a 2-0 deficit heading into the last of the seventh inning, the North Carolina state champions had relief pitcher McGuire Graddock toeing the rubber after he replaced starter Alex Holland, who worked 4 2-3 innings.
Andrew Anglin reached via an error in the seventh and was replaced by pinch-runner Bradan Mullenix. Soon thereafter, Morris smacked his game-tying two-run jack to left.
“I just told them we got to go one pitch and one at-bat at a time; let’s just try to make some things happen,” Post 15 manager Mike Goodwin said of the message to his team prior to what could’ve been their last inning of the season.
“I told the kids I do not want to go home and they responded.”
After the blast, Graddock was lifted in favor of Mitch Baddour, who suffered the mound setback.
Blake Bennett reached after the bomb via a walk and Todd Burner followed with a swinging bunt, which he beat out for an infield single. Hunter Thompson proceeded to hit into a fielder’s choice, which forced Bennett out at third.
With runners on first and second, Chase Swain flew out to left and extra innings were looking like a probability. However, Batten sent a 3-1 offering from Baddour into the left-center field gap as Burner raced around third and crossed the plate easily to keep Post 15’s season alive.
“It was a bomb. He (the left fielder) didn’t have a chance,” Goodwin said of Batten’s hit. “The kid went after it, but there was no way he was going to catch it.
“It was over his head. It was a no-doubter. It would’ve been a double easily. I’ll take that problem.”
After issuing nine walks during Wednesday’s opening-round 11-1 setback to Lyon County Post 68 of Kentucky, the free passes weren’t much of an issue on Thursday.
“It was huge. I can’t stress how important the job he did today as far as keeping us in the game until our offense finally woke up,” Goodwin said of winning pitcher Colin Bryant, who scattered seven hits in the complete-game victory while allowing one earned run with three base on balls and a pair of strikeouts.
Wilmington scored its first run in the top of the first thanks to an RBI single by Zach Zabriskie, who went 2 for 3. In the third, Max Hildreth, who also had two hits, singled and later scored on an error.
“The Hayden Morris home run today was so dramatic and so epic,” added the Post 15 manager, whose club improved to 26-13 and returns to action in another elimination game at 4:30 p.m. today versus Alabama state champ Troy Post 70.
“I feel so happy for the kids to bounce back the way they did and to send the North Carolina champ home. That’s a big deal. We have a difficult road in front of us. I don’t know how it’s going to go Friday, but I feel much better about the mindset of the kids.”
Morris also added a double to finish 2 for 3. Aside from Batten and Burner, Post 15 also had singles from Bennett and Max Anderson.
