BACF Football Classic this Friday

W.Va. players want win, support cause

PARKERSBURG — Seven of the West Virginia players in Friday’s 7 p.m. Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis Football Classic against Ohio in St. Marys talked about the upcoming game.

For Roane County’s Brandon May, “I’m excited for it,” he said. “I’m ready to strap it up again and go; it’s time to play again.”

May, who is off this fall to play college football at Glenville State, will be at receiver and defensive back Friday night.

He was all-LKC three times as a sophomore, junior and senior, and special mention all-state as a senior.

On the W.Va. team, May said Monday that “we’re physicaly sound everywhere; we’ve just got to get the chemistry down now. But it shouldn’t take too long to figure it all out.”

Williamstown’s Evan Amos is “excited about playing in this game; it gives me an opportunity to make more friends.”

He’s headed to GSC too and “some of these guys are going there too, so it gives me a chance to know them better before I get over there.”

Amos expects to play linebacker at Glenville, as he will in the BACF game.

He stressed that “this game is for a good cause, and that gives me a chance to play another high school football game.”

Aaron Peterman from Wirt County is going to Marietta College after playing center in the BACF game.

He played against a lot of teams at Wirt that he has as W.Va. teammates in the BACF game.

“It’s been fun to be around here with a bunch of guys from a bunch of different schools, as well as a game for a good cause too,” said Peterman.

He’s going to play outside linebacker and and stand-up defensive end at Marietta, which is “only about 30 minutes from my house,” he noted.

Peterman decided on Marietta College “mainly because they had a major I wanted, and that was land and energy management.”

For Doddridge County nose guard William Howell, “we’re just here to play football, have a good time and meet some pretty cool people,” he said.

A first-team all-stater and second-team all-USA as a senior, Howell does “hope I win this one last game for me, and because it’s for a really good cause.”

“Yes sir,” he said. “Winning’s everything. But if we lose, I came here, made good memories and made some good friends, so either way, it’s worth it.”

Ethan Mahan, Ravenswood defensive end, “was interested in playing in the BACF game when my coach asked me, and I said, ‘Why not!’ “

And being a charity game, “that made it even more like me wanting to play for something like that,” said Mahan.

This will be his last high school game too, so Mahan wants to make “it a win and a memorable one,” he said.

Dylan Richards’ four-year varsity career at Parkersburg High “didn’t really kick off until my senior year,” he said, when Richards started at left guard and played some at defensive end.

He’s bound for Wheeling Jesuit to play football. “What really grabbed me was it being a new program and kind of like an unique opportunity to go into an automatic battle for a spot right off the bat,” he related,

Richards watched the BACF game in the past and said that “it’s really cool to see some football back in the summer. And it’s for a great cause.”

St. Marys’ Matt Eichhorn will play flanker and safety in the BACF game Friday. He watched the BACF game “when I was little growing up and watched it last year when some of my teammates played in it and it’s exciting.

“And this year, we’re just going out there, have fun and win.”

Plus, “(West Virginia head) coach (Mike) Byus has talked to us every day about what the game is actually for and what we’re doing it for,” said Eichhorn.

And Eichhorn too gets to play Friday’s game at St. Marys, “so that should be fun as well as to be back there again,” he said.
