BACF hoops games tonight

PARKERSBURG — The high school basketball season may be over for some, but there’s an important part to be played yet as tonight both girls and boys from Ohio and West Virginia will take to the court at Parkersburg South’s Rod Oldham Athletic Center for the 17th annual BACF (Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis) Basketball Classic.

With all the proceeds going to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to help fund research into finding a cure for the debilitating disease, the event’s motto always has been that “It’s not just a game — It’s a BATTLE for a cure.”

The two games tonight for the price ($5) of only one at the doors (open at 4:30 p.m.) matches up Ohio and West Virginia in the girls’ contest first at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys’ duel in the nightcap that’s scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m., but usually starts somewhere closer to 8 p.m. That’s because at halftime of the girls’ tilt, the boys will hold their 3-point shooting and slam-dunk contests, while at intermission of the boys’ game, the girls will have their free-throw and 3-point competitions.

There will also be performances throughout the evening by Jump Company USA and the Parkersburg South Southern Belles as well as other special activities.

In the BACF basketball series since it began in 2002, the West Virginia girls hold a 9-7 lead, while the W.Va. boys have more of a margin at 12-4.

Heading up the teams will be Ohio head coaches Jerry Close (Waterford) for the girls and Mark Romick (River) for the boys, and West Virginia head coaches Mick Price (Ravenswood) for the boys and Ed Davis (Parkersburg South) for the girls.

Topping the Ohio girls roster will be four Waterford players (Hannah Duff, Megan Ball, Alli Kern, Hayley Duff) and three from Warren (Kate Liston, Peyton Bowe, Emily Jackson), while the Buckeye boys sport two hoopsters each from Warren (Josh Huffman, Troy Huck), River and Vinton County.

On the West Virginia side for the girls, there are a trio from Parkersburg South (Devin Hefner, Allyssa Wilson, Allie Taylor) and two from Buckhannon-Upshur, and the Mountaineer boys lineup will include three from both Parkersburg South (Cole Plants, Kerwyn Marshall, Shane Snider) and George Washington, and two more each from Parkersburg High (Seth Dailey, Parker Miller) and Ravenswood (Jayden Rhodes, Isaiah Morgan).
