SPENCER — Powered by an all-around team effort, Ravenswood repeated as Little Kanawha Conference champions with a 73-62 win over Braxton County Monday at Roane County High School.

The Red Devils, ranked No. 1 in Class A, completed a perfect 13-0 campaign in the LKC and improved to 19-1 overall.

“I’m proud of the kids because this was their goal from day one,” said veteran Ravenswood head coach Mick Price. “They wanted to win back-to-back (LKC titles) because it’s really hard to do. I’m really proud of them.”

Isaiah Morgan led the charge offensively, scoring a game-high 26 points and hit five 3-pointers, including a deep one at the first-quarter buzzer to give the Devils an 18-11 lead.

Morgan is one of seven seniors on the team that all were a part of last year’s LKC championship and state tournament run. He said going back-to-back in the conference was a special accomplishment.

“It’s a very hard thing to win it once,” Morgan said. “Then when you come back the next year you’ve kind of got a target on your back. So to come back and win it a second year, it just means that much more, especially with this senior group. We’ve been playing together since fourth grade. We’re not just teammates, we’re a group of best friends.”

The lead ballooned to 10, 35-25, by halftime.

“I was pleased early with our defense, holding them to 25 at the half,” Price said. “That was good.”

By the end of the third quarter, Ravenswood led by 11, 53-42. The Devils took their biggest lead of the game with 6:25 left in the fourth quarter, when Jayden Rhodes’ 3-pointer put them up 17, 61-44.

Rhodes put together a 17-point, six-assist performance. Stephen Dawson added 17 points and six boards.

“I thought Jayden Rhodes played great tonight,” Price said. “I really thought he handled himself well on both ends. He distributed the ball well and played great defense. I thought he showed true senior leadership tonight.”

Added Morgan of the balanced attack, “Anytime we go into a game, we’re not just looking to try and get one guy going. We play as a team and try to get good looks. I think tonight we executed, got good shots and knocked them down.”

Braxton got back within nine, 69-60, with a minute left in the game thanks to back-to-back buckets by Cole Browning, who led the Eagles with 17 points, nine boards and five assists. Tayton Stout added 14 points while Seth Arnold chipped in 10 points and five dimes.

Blake Bennett’s steal and layup with 50 seconds left put Ravenswood up 71-60 and all but secured the win.

“Braxton is heck of a team,” said Morgan, who went 1-of-2 at the free throw line to snap a streak of 61 consecutive made foul shots. “They played a great game. We executed, played really hard and were able to pull it out in the end.”
