Both Marietta College basketball squads are going dancing

MARIETTA – The Marietta College men’s basketball team received an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament Monday afternoon.

The Pioneers will be making their seventh overall NCAA appearance and sixth in the last eight seasons.

Marietta (21-6 overall) will travel to Wittenberg University for the first two rounds of the tournament. The Pioneers will face off against the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (20-7) in the first round. This will be the first meeting between Marietta and Oshkosh on the hardwood.

Oshkosh was the No. 3 seed in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament and was eliminated in the semifinals by the eventual tournament champions, Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Host Wittenberg (26-2) plays Misericordia University (17-10) in their first round match up. The Tigers are undefeated on their home court this season going a perfect 15-0, including a win over Marietta back in December. Wittenberg won the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles this winter.

Misericordia was the No. 4 seed in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Tournament and upset the Nos. 1 and 3 seeds to claim the conference title and automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

The 64-team championship field is comprised of 43 conference champions and 21 at-large teams. First and second round games will be played March 2-3. Winners advance to one of four sectional round sites March 9-10. The semifinals and championship will be played at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va. March 16-17.

Marietta women receive OAC bid

By virtue of winning the Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship, the Marietta College women’s basketball team received an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament Monday afternoon.

This will be the Pioneers’ first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Marietta (24-4 overall) will travel to Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois for the first two rounds of the tournament. The Pioneers will battle the host school in the their opener. This will be the first meeting between Marietta and Illinois Wesleyan on the hardwood.

The Titans (24-3) were the No. 1 seed and won the Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament crown. Illinois Wesleyan went 15-1 in the CCIW to win the regular season championship.

In the other first round game, DePauw University (25-2) will play Trine University (24-3). DePauw went 16-0 to win the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season title and was the No. 1 seed in the NCAC Tournament. The Tigers were knocked off in the semifinals by Wittenberg and received at at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Trine claimed a share of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular season title with a 15-1 conference regular. The Thunder tied Hope during the regular season and lost to the Flying Dutch in the MIAA Tournament championship.
