Tigers take 3rd at MLK Invitational

MARIETTA — Alicen Teer has swum competitively for over a decade at the Marietta Family YMCA on 7th Street, first as a Marlin and then as an MHS Tiger.

The talented Marietta High senior swimmer capped her career at her home pool on a high note in Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational.

“This was my last meet here,” Teer said. “I’m done swimming (competitively) here after 13 years.

“This was a really good way to end my career here.”

Teer finished second in the 50 freestyle in 28.23 and was a member of the winning 200 yard medley relay, which also included Reagan Loeber, Piper Halliday, and Ashley Stewart. The foursome’s time was 2:06.88.

“Our 200 medley has been working really hard,” Teer said. “The girls are doing good today, and I’m really proud of the whole team.”

Teer also scored in the 100 free (third in 1:03.17) and 200 free relay (runner-up in 1:55.48), which also featured Aryn Robinson, Halliday, and Stewart.

Stewart and Halliday also were solo-event winners, respectively, in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.56 and 100 breaststroke in 1:22.10.

Halliday was third in the 50 free in 28.85.

“It’s been a pretty good day,” said Stewart, a Tiger sophomore. “I’m doing pretty well, but I’d like to be a little faster on my fly — and I’m working on it.

“We’re doing some really hard practices, so we should be tapering soon. I’m expecting to do really well at sectionals.”

Stewart also finished third in the 500 freestyle in 6:22.87, while Allison Hiser wsa fourth in 6:27.25.

Loeber placed third in the 200 freestyle in 2:27.49 and fourth in the 100 backstroke in 1:12.72.

The Marietta boys 200 yard freestyle relay team of Garrett Herb, Hayden Reed, Max Garrison, and Gabe Villarrueta finished third in 1:56.60.

Team-wise, the Marietta girls were third overall (136 points) to first-place Athens (149) and second-place Martins Ferry (145). Rounding out the rest of the field were New Philadelphia (78), Philo (40), Maysville (32), and Bishop Rosecrans (17).

On the boys’ side, New Philadelphia (179.5), Athens (178.5), Martins Ferry (105), and Marietta (45), respectively.

Athens was the combined score winner with 327.5 points, while Marietta was fourth with 181.

John Glenn and Watkins were no-shows.

“It was a pretty good meet,” said Marietta co-head coach Walt Teer. “Some of the swimmers had best times. At this time of the season, though, you don’t want to seed anybody to make it a big time drop right now. You want to know that they’re tore down, that they’re working hard.

“Our league championship (ECOL) is coming up a week from Friday. Next week, we’ve got the River View Invitational in Coshocton, and that’s it until we hit sectionals at OU (Ohio University).”
