This week in MOV athletics

Two things before I get started with the sports goings-on in the Mid-Ohio Valley.

Our sports crew needs a new sports writer/paginator (page layout).

Qualifications include sports and page layout knowledge.

If you know anyone who is interested or yourself are interested, please stop by and drop off a resume to Christina Myer.

One shoutout and then to the sports, I would like to send a word of congratulations to the Parkersburg South wrestling team on their fifth straight Ohio Valley Athletic Conference 5A title.

Shaun Smith’s Patriots smashed Beaver Local and the rest of the field on their way to a new points record over three days of competition.

And now your feature presentation…

We stay on the mat for our first two big events.

Mountain State Athletic Conference wrestling championship action takes place at the PHS Fieldhouse on Saturday.

A dozen teams have their eyes set on dethroning Matt Littleton’s Big Reds from the top of the MSAC Mountain.

This will be easier said than done as PHS ran away from the field last season and have a lot of talent returning from a year ago.

I would go out on a limb and say the Big Reds have a pretty good warm-up match as Parkersburg South makes the trip across the river for the annual dual at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Class A also has a big local happening as the Bob Zide Rumble takes place inside Williamstown High School with an 8 a.m. start time Saturday.

Next up, Thursday night sees a very special gathering at the Parkersburg Country Club.

It isn’t quite a sporting event, but rather the celebration of city sports greats.

Three new members are being inducted into the Parkersburg High School Sports Hall of Fame and they are all hardly surprising. Nick Swisher, Susan Gardner and Amy Deem take their place among the many outstanding athletes to don the red and white over the past 100 years.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased inside the PHS Fieldhouse for $50 a piece.

The night’s proceedings begin with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Stayed tuned for columns on all three of the Big Red honorees later this week.

Wrestling won’t be the only athletic event PHS and South athletes test their mettle in against each other this week.

The girls’ basketball teams clash for the second time this season, but this time at 7:30 p.m. Saturday inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center. It will be a matchup of two Top 10 teams.

Scott Cozzen’s red and white took the first matchup, 55-52, back on Dec. 30 inside the Fieldhouse.

The game comes at the end of a busy week for both teams too. Each has three games on the slate in the next seven days.

Apologizes to Cyndi Lauper, but the PHS and South girls don’t get to have all the fun this week as the boys also have big games on the schedule.

The top two teams in the state both make a visit to Parkersburg for contests.

Top-ranked and so-far undefeated University takes on Mike Fallon’s squad at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, while Jeff Mennillo’s red and white group hosts No. 2 Woodrow Wilson at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

PHS looks to pick up their second straight win over a top 5-ranked Flying Eagles team in as many years.

I remember last year’s game well, seeing as I covered it.

The Big Reds dominated from start to finish in a 15-point victory.

Lastly, Parkersburg Catholic and Williamstown boys’ hoops do battle for the second time this season at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.

Scott Sauro’s team hopes to get closer than the 17-point margin they loss by back on Jan. 12 I am sure.

Check in again for another preview next week.
