SWIMMING

South’s Collins claims OVAC title

WELLSBURG — Parkersburg South’s five-year reign of supremacy came to a close here Saturday as the Patriot boys finished runner-up to Wheeling Park, 431-258, after claiming the past five OVAC 5A swim championships.

Patriot Dominic Collins had the only championship win thanks to his 22.32 effort in the 50 freestyle. Collins was runner-up in the 100 freestyle after touching the wall in 49.57. Head coach Steve Lutz’ squad also had a runner-up showing from Macguire McDuff in the 100 backstroke (59.37). McDuff’s clocking of 1:55.69 in the 200 freestyle was good for third.

Makayla Burns led the PSHS girls with a fourth-place showing in the 500 freestyle as well as a fifth-place effort in the 200 freestyle.

WRESTLING

Big Red Carder runner-up

WADSWORTH, Ohio — Parkersburg High School got a runner-up effort from 145-pounder Stephen Carder here Saturday at the Wadsworth Grizzly Invitational as the Big Reds finished ninth overall as a team.

John Martin Best went 4-1 for the Big Reds and captured his 138-pound consolation match to take third.

Garret Donahue also lost just once, but had to settle for fifth at 106.

BOYS

Parkersburg Catholic 66, Trinity 64

MORGANTOWN — In a battle of ranked Class A programs, No. 10 Parkersburg Catholic rallied from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter here Saturday afternoon to upend No. 7 Trinity, 66-64.

PCHS, which improved to 8-4 and played without starter Ty Sturm who was sick, got a game-high 27 points from Cade Ullman and 21 more from Jeb Boice. Pat Copen added 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two blocks while Crusader teammate Jalen Brunny pulled down 10 rebounds.

Trinity (8-3) had double figure point-production from Joseph Zini (17), Joel Robertson (13) and Daniel Woods (13).

The Crusaders will look to continue their winning ways when St. Marys comes to town Tuesday night.

Ravenswood 104, Wahama 34

RAVENSWOOD — Ravenswood flexed its muscles in a 104-34 victory over Wahama Saturday.

The Red Devils, now 11-0, shot 63.6 percent (42 for 66) from the floor. Isaiah Morgan was the top scorer with 23 points as Ravenswood had six players in double figures. Stephen Dawson tallied a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double with a pair of blocks to boot. Chase Swain added 17 points, seven assists and six steals, Jayden Rhodes netted 13 points, eight dimes and five steals, Lakin Tucker registered 11 points and Blake Bennett finished with 10 markers and six assists.

Wahama, which trailed 33-7 after a quarter and 57-11 at halftime, was paced by Noah Litchfield’s 11 points, five boards and four blocks.

For Ravenswood, the margin of victory (70) was the third most lopsided in school history. It marked the 25th time a Red Devil team surpassed the century mark and the 104 points is tied for 12th most in school history. Also of note, the 42 made field goals tied Ravenswood’s school record previously held all alone by the 1991 team in a game versus Gilmer County.

Braxton 103, Gilmer 48

SUTTON — Braxton County easily improved to 11-2 on the campaign here Saturday as the Eagles rolled out to a 32-6 lead after one and dominated visiting Gilmer County, 103-48.

This marked the first time since Jan. 7 of 2000 the Eagles surpassed the century mark and it was just the fifth time in the 48-year history of the program.

Tayton Stout led the victors, who play host Monday to Nicholas County, with a game-high 26 points. Cole Browning added 23, Jaden Stewart scored a baker’s dozen while Payton Lockard and Seth Arnold combined for 17 points.

Gilmer County, now 0-10 with a road game Tuesday at Webster County, had double figuring scoring efforts from Brady Fitzwater (14) and Brad McHenry (12). Titan Justyn Dean added nine points.

Paden City 70,

Harman 59

PADEN CITY — Matt Saxon finished with a triple-double in Paden City’s 70-59 win over Harman Saturday.

Saxon tallied 10 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and four steals as the Wildcats improved to 3-6. Garrett Cross led Paden City with 18 points while Trey Slider added 16 and Seth Bohrer netted 12.

Josh Conti led Harman (2-7) with 16 points, followed by Shane Varner’s 14 and Braden Huffman’s 10.

St. Marys 51,

South Harrison 40

ST. MARYS — Isaak Mooney and Richard Dornon each double-doubled to help host St. Marys capture the championship game of the Blue Devils’ own 14th annual invitational thanks to a 51-40 victory against South Harrison here Saturday.

Mooney had game-highs of 16 points and 16 boards while Dornon had 13 points and 11 caroms. Cameron Miller added 10 points for the 4-5 Blue Devils.

Brent Barnette tallied 11 points for South Harrison (6-3).

Wirt County 62,

Frontier 51

ST. MARYS — Justin Windland went for 18 points and Trenton Burdette tallied 15 to help lift Wirt County past Frontier, 62-51, to capture Saturday’s consolation game of the 14th annual St. Marys Invitational.

The Tigers, who improved to 3-7 and play host to No. 2 Ravenswood on Tuesday, took control of the game thanks to a 26-7 edge in the second quarter.

Frontier’s Toby Minder and Logan Brookover tied for game-high scoring honors with 19 markers apiece.

Wirt County also got nine counters from Blake Batten and eight from Kyler Carper.

Calhoun County 67, Union 60

MT. ZION — Trenton Reed hit 11 of 11 from the charity stripe and poured in a game-high 33 points for visiting Union here Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as Calhoun County used a 31-10 advantage in the opening stanza to help register a 67-60 WVHIT first round tournament victory.

The 2-8 Red Devils, who head Monday to Webster County, got a team-high 20 markers from Adam Parsons. Soney Wilson pitched in 14 points, Levi Walker had 10 and Trevor Carder added eight.

Roane 74, Clay 66

CLAY — Playing its ninth road game of the campaign, visiting Roane County upped its mark to 7-4 after the Raiders dispatched Clay County here Saturday, 74-66.

Devin Heeter went for 33 points to lead all scorers for the Raiders, who welcome in Doddridge County on Tuesday. A.J. McGinnis added 14 points and Brandon Morris 13 in the victory.

Isaac Workman (24), Thomas Haverty (17) and Garrett Quinn (11) provided the bulk of the offense for Clay County (6-5).

Teays Valley Christian 51, Wood County

Christian 48

TEAYS VALLEY — Teays Valley Christian outscored Wood County Christian 8-2 in the fourth quarter to claim a 51-48 victory Saturday.

The Wildcats led 46-43 going into the final stanza but couldn’t get its offense going over the final eight minutes. Luke Spencer led the visitors with a 14-point, 12-rebounds double-double while Garrett Napier and Trey Davis added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Jason Lai led all scorers with 21 points while Andrew Breeding netted 12 for Teays Valley Christian.

Both teams are now 7-7.

GIRLS

Ritchie 53, Magnolia 43

ELLENBORO — Abi Haught went off for a career-high 27 points and Ritchie County improved to 5-8 following a 53-43 triumph versus visiting Magnolia here Saturday.

The Rebels, who play host Monday to Wirt County in a 7 p.m. varsity only affair, also received 10 points from Ashley Davis and eight markers from Cassie Tallman, who joined teammate Aleya Stanley with four steals.

Magnolia, now 6-6 with a road tilt Monday at Valley (Wetzel), had a team-high 18 points from Mady Winters and 13 by Kyndra Pilant.

Haught also grabbed seven boards.

Cameron 64, St. Marys 45

ST. MARYS — No. 5 Cameron bolted out to an 18-0 advantage and grabbed the championship of the 14th annual St. Marys Invitational here Saturday night after handing the host Blue Devils a 64-45 defeat.

Kelsie Minetel led the 13-1 Dragons with a game-high 24 points. Cari Scott had 14 and Jordyn Hughes 13.

Olivia DeWeese made her first career start for the 5-6 Blue Devils, who play Tuesday at Ravenswood, and had a team-high 15 points. Addie Furr finished with nine points or the hosts.

Frontier 63,

Wirt County 45

ST. MARYS — After scoring her 1,000th point in a semifinal loss to Cameron on Friday night, Frontier’s Kylie Daugherty poured in a game-high 30 points to help lead the Cougars to a 63-45 St. Marys Invitational consolation game victory against Wirt County on Saturday afternoon.

The 2-11 Cougars, who travel Monday to face Monroe Central, also received 17 points from Haley Bills and 10 counters from Logan Haught.

Wirt County (2-10) was led by Taylor Anderson’s 16-point effort. Morgan Wagner and Sydney Woods scored eight points apiece for the orange and black.

Cambridge 61,

Marietta 37

CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge dominated Marietta early, pulling out to a 39-9 halftime lead en route to a 61-37 victory Saturday.

The Bobcats were led by Lilly Ritz’s 19 points, Taylar Slaugher’s 13 points and Khloe Taylor’s 11.

Marietta, which outscored Cambridge 28-22 in the second half, got 11 points from Hannah Kroft and 10 from Natalie Brooks.

Parkersburg Christian 35, Mountain View

Christian 34

OAK HILL — The Parkersburg Christian Knights defeated Mountain View Christian by a score of 35-34 Saturday.

The Knights where down by 12 points with four minutes to go in the game before rallying for the victory.

Willow Walker led Parkersburg Christian in scoring with 16 points and added eight rebounds and seven blocks. LouMasi Lott had nine points, 21 rebounds, three assists and three blocks while Kaeli Vannoy scored eight points with six rebounds.

The Knights return to action on Monday night as they travel to East Richland Christian.
