Marshall 86, UAB 78, OT
HUNTINGTON — C.J. Burks was 4-for-4 from the free throw line while Marshall held UAB to just two points in the extra period as the Thundering Herd posted an 86-78 win on Saturday night.
Chris Cokley scored six of UAB’s final eight points in regulation, the final two on a layup with :24 left, to tie the game at 76-76 and force overtime. His dunk with 3:43 left in overtime to tie it at 78-78 were the Blazers only points in the extra period.
Burks knocked down 4 of 8 from behind the arc and 6 of 6 from the line to finish with 24 points for the Herd (14-6, 5-2 C-USA). Ajdin Penava added 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while John Elmore finished with his second triple double of the season, 14 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.
Cokley finished with 28 points and 14 rebounds to lead UAB (13-7, 4-3). Nate Darling added 21 points, William Lee scored 13 points and grabbed 10 boards and Nick Norton dished 10 assists.
Ohio 72, Eastern Michigan 66
YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) — Jordan Dartis tied a career high with seven 3-pointers and scored 24 points to lead Ohio over Eastern Michigan 72-66 on Saturday.
Dartis hit 7 of 10 3-point attempts with the Bobcats making 10 of 18 from the arc. Mike Laster added 16 points and Teyvion Kirk 12 for the Bobcats (9-9, 2-4 Mid-American), who snapped a three-game losing streak and won their first true road game.
James Thompson IV had 21 points and 14 rebounds, his 13th double-double this season, with Ty Groce adding 15 points, Paul Jackson 12 and Tim Bond 11 for EMU (11-8, 2-4). Bond reached 200 steals, second on the Eagles’ career list behind former NBA player Earl Boykins (220).
Kirk’s basket with 15 minutes left gave the Bobcats the lead for good and they led by 11 with three minutes remaining. The Eagles scored seven straight points to get within 69-65 with 1:32 remaining but no closer.
Glenville State 71,
W.Va. Wesleyan 65
GLENVILLE– Brook Ely’s layup from a Theo Brown assist put host Glenville State ahead for good at 64-63 with 2:35 to play here Saturday afternoon at the Waco Center as the Pioneers knocked off W.Va. Wesleyan to earn a 71-65 Mountain East Conference win.
Darhius Nunn led the G-men (3-14, 2-10) with a game-high 21 points. Ely went for 15 points and Jon Dunmyer had 14. Brown grabbed a game-high nine boards for GSC.
Fred Brondsted’s 17 points led the Bobcats (2-16, 2-10). Weslyean also received double figure scoring efforts from Dusan Vicentic with 12 and Kam Cooper with 10.
Former Ripley standout Luke Layhew played 26 minutes in the loss and tallied seven points, three boards and one assist.
Findlay 86, Ohio Valley 73
VIENNA — Taren Sullivan hit 13 of 19 from the field and went off for a game-high 31 points to help lead Findlay to an 86-73 Great Midwest Athletic Conference victory versus host Ohio Valley University here Saturday at the Snyder Activity Center.
Elijah Kahlig (18), Martyce Kimbrough (16) and Alex White (10) also cracked double figures for the Oilers (14-4, 8-3).
Ohio Valley (2-14, 1-9) misfired on 20 of 25 attempts from 3-point land. Aleksandar Djordjevic paced the Fighting Scots with 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Former Parkersburg Christian standout Christian Alley canned 6 of 12 field goals en route to 15 points. OVU’s Parker Black and Victor Demetrio had 12 points apiece. Demetrio also had six boards and swatted a game-high four shots.
John Carroll 99,
Marietta College 75
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — A hot start and a big finish propelled No. 20 John Carroll past No. 18 Marietta College 99-75 in an Ohio Athletic Conference showdown Saturday.
The Blue Streaks (14-3 overall, 8-2 OAC) jumped out to a 19-2 lead early in the game. Marietta (13-4, 7-3) charged back and got as close as three, 51-48, early in the second half but another big JCU run down the stretch put the game away.
The Pioneers were outrebounded 46-35 and shot 38 percent (22 for 58) compared to John Carroll’s 51 percent (38 for 75).
Mel Shuler led the Pioneers with 21 points. Kyle Dixon added 16 for an MC squad that was without starters Anthony Wallace and DeVaughn Wingard.
The Blue Streaks got 18 points apiece from Antonio Vuyancih and Matthew Csuhran plus16 from Greg Parella.
The Pioneers are back in action at 7 p.m. Wednesday when they play host to Otterbein.
WOMEN
No. 17 West Virginia 69,
Iowa State 59
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Teana Muldrow had 27 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 17 West Virginia pulled away in the second quarter and cruised to a 69-59 victory over Iowa State on Saturday night to snap a two-game skid.
The Mountaineers (16-4, 4-4 Big 12 Conference) rebounded from a six-point loss at No. 24 Oklahoma State on Wednesday, and a 76-74 home loss to TCU on Jan. 13. Iowa State (8-11, 2-6) has lost six of its last seven games.
Muldrow was 10-of-19 shooting, and the senior forward collected her 10th double-double of the season. Chania Ray added 14 points, and Naomi Davenport had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Mountaineers outscored Iowa State 20-12 in the second quarter on its way to a 36-23 halftime advantage. Muldrow finished with 13 points in the first half, and converted a 3-point play and followed it with a 3-pointer to stretch West Virginia’s lead to 21 points late in the third.
Emily Durr had 15 points and Bridget Carleton chipped in 11 for the Cyclones.
Glenville State 92,
W.Va. Wesleyan 59
GLENVILLE — Visiting West Virginia Wesleyan only trailed No. 18 Glenville State College 32-28 at halftime here Saturday afternoon inside the Waco Center, but the Pioneers exploded in the third quarter to the tune of a 32-15 outburst and rolled to a 92-59 Mountain East Conference victory.
Paris McLeod compiled game-highs of 20 points and six steals while adding eight rebounds in 19 minutes of action to lead the Pioneers (17-1, 12-0), who hit just 14 of 56 from downtown.
Julie Bishop contributed 14 points, Courtney Davis double-doubled with 10 points and as many boards while Taylor Parker also tossed in 10 counters. Erika Toney had six points, two steals and a game-high 12 rebounds in the victory.
Abi Gabauer’s 10 points paced the Bobcats (5-13, 3-9).
Findlay 69, Ohio Valley 50
VIENNA — The University of Findlay led 38-24 at halftime and held host Ohio Valley University to less than 27 percent shooting here Saturday afternoon at the Snyder Activity Center as the Oilers came away with a 69-50 Great Midwest Athletic Conference triumph.
The Oilers (14-3, 11-2) received a game-high 18 points from Lynsey Englebrecht while teammate Jenna Stegmaier finished with a double-double of 11 points and 11 caroms. Anna Hintz tossed in 11 points while Haley Horstman contributed 10 points and four assists for the visitors.
OVU (0-15, 0-11) had double figure scoring efforts from Amiaya Melvins (13) and Zae Sellers (10). Ariel Johnson had nine points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Fighting Scots.
