OVU men’s soccer advance to Sweet 16 after win

CHARLESTON — Ohio Valley University men’s soccer team’s historic season will continue after a heroic effort in a shootout victory over NCAA Divison II Midwest Region fourth-seed Davis & Elkins Saturday afternoon at Schoenbaum Stadium in Charleston.

The big moment didn’t prove too much for the Fighting Scots, playing in their first NCAA tournament game in program history.

Luis Rincon’s team put away three straight penalty kicks, while keeper Carlos Rubio allowed nothing past him in three attempts from the Senators.

Ignacio Diaz, Javier Rodriguez and Guillermo Segovia sent balls past D&E keeper Hedi Mehnaoui for the Fighting Scots (17-1-4).

It was the second consecutive victory over the Senators for Rincon’s team after it handed them a 3-1 loss in the finals of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament.

However unlike in the conference finals, it was D&E who got on the board first to put pressure on the Scots.

Abel Amayah scored his fourth goal of the season after beating his defender in the box during the eighth minute.

The score was one of just two shots faced by Rubio, and one of just seven for D&E overall in the contest.

OVU definitely had the shooting advantage as they sent 26 shots toward Mehnaoui, who recorded five saves on the balls making it to him.

Fighting Scots fans cheered and waited in anticipation for the equalizer for their squad.

Their support paid off when Segovia delivered the tying goal after he took an assist off Miguel Campos’ foot and buried it in the back of the net during the 54th minute.

OVU moves on to face second-seed Rockhurst with the time, date and site still to be determined.
