Yellowjackets take down Ravenswood, 9-0
WILLIAMSTOWN — Williamstown High went on a scoring binge.
Emily Pickering, Shyla Watson, and Jillian Leo each had two goals as the host and fourth-seeded Yellowjackets blanked fifth-seeded Ravenswood High, 9-0, in a girls’ soccer sectional tournament lid-lifter Monday.
“This is a great way to start the sectionals,” said first-year WHS coach Dave Pickering. “There was a lot of scoring, but even better than that there was a lot of passing and a lot of people involved in the plays. That’s how we wanted it to be.”
Lilly McMullen, Maddi Morgan, and Emma Coiner added one goal apiece for the maroon and gold booters, who improved their record to 8-10-3. McMullen also finished with two assists, while Katie Pickering, Coiner, and Leo each had one.
Williamstown keeper Mara Rinehart was credited with a clean sheet.
During regular-season play, the Yellowjackets shut out the Red Devils, 8-0.
Ravenswood exits with a 5-14-1 record. The Red Devils were in a defensive posture for much of the match. Keeper Kayla Liptrap was credited with 15 saves.
McMullen got things started in the sixth minute of play when she blasted a shot past Liptrap to make it 1-0.
In the 14th minute, senior captain Emily Pickering drilled a ball into the back of the net to extend the Yellowjacket lead to 2-0.
The WHS goals then came in rapid successsion with Watson, Leo, Watson again, Leo again, and Morgan all scoring to give the maroon and gold a commanding 7-0 halftime advantage.
Early in the second half, the rout resumed with Coiner scoring on a nice assist from McMullen.
Capping all the net-bending, Emily Pickering put the finishing touch on younger sister Katie’s cross from the right wing.
Williamstown is scheduled to play at Nitro in sectional second-round match at 5 p.m. today.
“We haven’t seen Nitro this year,” said Dave Pickering. “We’ve heard lots about them. They’re ranked number one in our section.”
