PARKERSBURG — The Parkersburg South offense got going after a penalty-plagued start and visiting Greenbrier East’s only scores came on a pair of kick returns as the Patriot defense shut out the Spartan offense en route to a 29-12 win Friday night at Erickson All-Sports Facility.

South, now 3-5 after its second straight win, next plays at Wheeling Park 7 p.m. next Friday, while GE fell to 1-7 and plays host to Princeton at 7 p.m. next Friday also.

With the Spartans backed up inside their own 8, South’s Tyee Gibson blocked a Greenbrier punt out of the end zone for a safety and 2-0 lead at 8:51 of first quarter.

GE recovered a Patriot fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the South 46 and a 37-yard pass play put the ball at the PS 17. But the Pats “D” eventually stopped the Spartan threat at the 8.

Midway through the second stanza, South got a 20-yard pass to Nick Yoho from Brayden Mooney to the East 10 and two plays later, Yoho went seven yards up the middle to paydirt at 6:23 to hand the Pats a 9-0 advantage after Ahmed Ali’s PAT.

South got the ball back with 3:53 to go in the first half at the GE 45. Zane Hinzman gathered in a 49-yard reception from Mooney to get to the Spartan 5, immediately followed by Yoho tallying a TD at the 2:03 mark to lead 16-0.

But not for long as the next two scores belonged to the Spartans’ Colby Piner, who ran back a kickoff 97 yards for six points, then did the same with a 68-yard punt return to close the gap to 16-12 by 6:33 of the third quarter.

But South was not to be denied on this night, coming right back with a 60-yard TD drive in three plays. Yoho swept left for 11 yards and Gibson swept right for 26 to the Spartan 23, from where Hunter Shank toted the pigskin into the end zone at 6:00 of the third to expand the gap back to 10 at 22-12.

Gibson partially blocked a GE punt early in the fourth period and Shank recovered at the Spartan 48 with 11:23 to play. Five and a half minutes later, Shank dove the final yard across the goal line at 6:53 for the final TD of the night.

South finished with 304 yards rushing and 120 passing for a 424 total, while limiting GE to just 60 rushing and 76 passing for 136.

Yoho netted 116 yards on 16 carries, while Mooney was 10-for-18 passing for 120 yards.
