VINCENT — Ethan Yost had a highlight film goal.

The Warren senior striker angled a difficut, left-side, direct kick just inside the far right post to help the Warriors blank visiting Marietta High, 4-0, in boys soccer action Tuesday night.

“I heard the coach (Ekrem Eksi) yelling me to go for it,” said Yost, who scored two goals in the match. “The goalie (Ian Coleman) wasn’t ready, and they (Tigers) didn’t have a wall set.”

Matt Goodman and Zed Strahler also had one goal apiece for the Warriors, who improved their overall record to 7-1-1. Jared Hall, Matt Dugan, and Tommy Wussick each had an assist, while keeper Thomas Williams was credited with a clean sheet.

All of Warren’s goals came in the second half. Two came off set pieces.

“We were even the first half,” said Eksi. “We weren’t doing what we wanted to do.

“But in the second half, we were a little bit more disciplined.”

Marietta fell to 5-2-1 on the season.

“We gave up set pieces to Parkersburg last week, and again tonight against Warren,” said MHS boss Todd Morris. “That’s too many goals conceded on set pieces, and that’s just a mindset. We need to be better than that. It comes down to personal accountability and marking.”

Late in the first half, Marietta’s Austyn Chen put a ball into an open net, but the goal was nullified due to an offsides infraction.

“I was 80 yards away, so I can’t really comment,” Morris said. “(Chen) seemed to think it was a goal.”

At halftime, it was 0-0.

But early in the second half, Goodman put the finishing touch on Hall’s long, free kick to snap the scoreless tie.

“After the first goal, we got a little more comfortable,” Eksi said. “We played better, and we worked very hard.”

Added Yost, “We came out strong in the second half.”

About midway through the second half, Dugan crossed the ball from the right wing, and Yost was there to put it in the back of the net to make it 2-0.

“I could see the cross come in,” Yost said. “And the ball just dropped right in front of me.”

With a little over six minutes remaining in the match, Yost was fouled by a Tiger defender just outside the penalty box on the left flank. He quickly lined up the ball, and curved it over Coleman’s head into the far corner of the goal to make it 3-0.

“It was a nice kick,” Eksi said.

Capping all the scoring in the last minute of play of the match, Strahler battled and booted the ball past Coleman. Wussick got the assist.

“We won 4-0, but that doesn’t make Marietta a bad team,” Eksi said. “They played well, and they’re a good team.”

Said Morris, “Give Warren credit. They played very hard, and they were the aggressor for the majority of the game, especially in the second half.”
