PARKERSBURG — “My first visit I absolutely fell in love with the college and campus. I had an overnight stay and played hoops with the team in an open gym.”

One of the harder decisions for any high school student is the selection of where they wish to continue their academic career and possibly scholastic athletic career at at the next level.

However, for Parkersburg South’s Lexi Moore – one trip to Marietta College in August of 2016 and she was hooked as evidenced by the above statement.

“The team felt more like a family, which reminded me of coach (Ed) Davis too,” said Moore.

“I did my overnight stay with Brooke Borich (a Fort Frye graduate) and we hung in her dorm room for the night. All the freshmen have on-campus housing.”

The Patriot senior made her choice official among friends, family, and supporters, when she committed to play basketball for MC head coach Kole Vivian at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday inside the cafeteria of Parkersburg South High School.

“It is pretty great because I am not stressing about it anymore,” said the newly minted Pios athlete, the lone West Virginia native on 2017-18 Pioneer women’s squad.

Glenville State, Ohio Union, Bethany, and the Air Force were the other schools who contacted the seeker of higher education.

MC’s Vivian first contacted her after watching her play in a local tournament.

This season, the senior was honored for her efforts as she helped lead South to a Class AAA Region IV co-final against eventual state champion Hungtington with a spot on the West Virginia Class AAA All-State third team, as voted on by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. She received first team All-Twin Rivers Athletic Conference recognition as well.

“I think making those three state tournaments in a row is my favorite memory I have of my playing time as a Patriot,” said Moore, when asked about her Patriot hoops resume.

“She meant a lot to us and gave us some depth off the bench her first few years,” said Davis. “She finally got extended minutes this season and we were counting on her to play well to be successful. She stepped up and provded us offense, something everyone saw … But her versatility on defense was very critical as well. We asked her to guard a different kind of person every night from the perimeter to the post and she did well.”

During her time at MC, Moore’s major course of study will be biology.

“I have just always liked anatomy and chemistry and all those types of classes,” said Moore. “I like how the body works. Medical school is the plan afterward and I would like to be a pediatrician. I enjoy working with babies and kids — I love them. I grew up around a lot of little cousins and always babysat them because I love little kids.”

The soon-to-be graduate kept a 3.8 grade point average while at South. She was involved in Drug Free Clubs of America, and took a college English course this year.

Moore joins a basketball program on the rise.

Vivian led the MC program to its first winning season in 22 years (16-11 and 9-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference) and a first-round bye in the conference tournament.

She is joined in the incoming freshman class by talented Belpre player Cheyenne Barker.

“I am pretty excited because I think we are going to do pretty well since we have a lof of people coming back plus the new freshmen,” said Moore.

“I am excited for her,” said Davis when asked about Moore’s selection. “She kind of wanted to stay close to home so her parents could come watch her play. I think she will be a good fit for them. She brings the ability to step up to a challenge, a lot of energy, and the desire to win to the MC team – she is really disappointed when things don’t work out.”
