Williamstown rolls Wirt County in a sectional matchup

WILLIAMSTOWN — They haven’t forgotten.

Williamstown can’t shake that feeling it had after beating Parkersburg Catholic twice during the regular season before losing to its rival in the postseason in 2016.

Now the Yellowjackets (15-8) have a chance to return the favor when they travel to Catholic (15-7) in the Region IV, Section I semifinal contest at 7 p.m.

“We’re excited for this game,” said senior Josh Folwell, who scored a career-best 28 in a 79-48 victory over Wirt County Monday night. “They did it to us last year. Why not us this year?”

It certainly has a chance to be another great game in a strong rivalry. Catholic defeated Williamstown 54-48 and 58-40 this season.

“Parkersburg Catholic has proven a lot this year,” said Williamstown coach Scott Sauro. “They beat Notre Dame and St. Marys. We know Catholic is a very good team, and it should be fun to play them again. The kids on both teams will be excited to play again.”

Williamstown looked tournament ready on Monday.

Folwell missed his first shot of the night and then made 10 of his next 13, including five three-point baskets. He also had seven rebounds.

“Josh is a real good shooter, and when he plays with confidence he’s that much better,” Sauro said. “He created some turnovers and got some rebounds, and sometimes for a shooter that will get you going and I think it did for Josh.”

Folwell finished with seven rebounds and four steals.

“It’s a lot of fun scoring, but our whole team is about winning – that’s even more fun,” Folwell said.

Sauro was also impressed with sophomore Trent Lynch, who he said has maybe made one or two baskets all season. Lynch scored 14 against Wirt (2-21).

“We’ve had illnesses going around and we had him doing more in practice and he wasn’t missing anything,” Sauro said. “So we told him he was going to play more tonight and he did very well.”

Senior Isaac Brown had a solid night with nine points and 10 rebounds, while fellow senior Trevor Hoosier had 10 rebounds.

“Williamstown has a very nice team and Coach Sauro does a great job,” said Wirt County coach Chase Mills. “They will give Parkersburg Catholic a tough game.”

Hunter Hickman led the Tigers with 10 points, while Blake Batten added nine points in the season finale.

Williamstown, on the other hand, is looking to go 2-0 in tournament play.

“When it’s tournament time, every game is amplified,” Folwell said. “The pressure is on and we like it.”
