BOYS BASKETBALL

Parkersburg South 77, George Washington 76

CHARLESTON — Cole Plants stole a halfcourt inbound pass with 4.4 seconds to play and made his first foul shot with 1.2 ticks remaining as Parkersburg South stunned No. 3 George Washington here Tuesday evening, 77-76.

After Plants canned his first foul shot, he intentionally missed the second and the host Patriots’ prayer from nearly the length of the court was not close.

Shane Snider had a game-high 22 points and joined teammates Bobby Foggin (14) and Todd Burner (13) in draining a quartet of 3s apiece. PSHS, which improved to 11-10, knocked down 15 of 31 from 3-point land shot 50 percent (27 of 54) for the contest. Plants, who added five assists, grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double.

GW (16-5) had five players crack double figures in scoring led by Tracy Conliffe with 21 and Bunky Brown with 18.

South returns to action on Thursday evening for Senior/Hailley Parsons Night. Foggin is the lone Patriot 12th-grader while Parsons, a sophomore, is battling cancer.

Ripley 78, Spring Valley 59

RIPLEY — Jamison Hunt had game-highs of 25 points and 12 assists to help host Ripley to a 78-59 victory Tuesday evening against visiting Spring Valley.

Eli Casto added 23 points, eight boards and two steals for the Vikings, who also got a double-double of 10 points and 10 caroms from Nathan Hall.

Chandler Stacy’s 18 points paced the visitors.

Charleston Catholic 62, Braxton County 53

CHARLESTON — Braxton County got outscored 22-6 in the third quarter Tuesday night and the visiting Eagles suffered a 62-53 defeat to Charleston Catholic.

The Eagles were led in the scoring column by Tayton Stout’s 15-point effort. Cole Browning tallied a baker’s dozen and Heath Cottrill scored 10 points.

Michael Martin had a game-high 17 points for the Irish, who also received 16 counters apiece from Kevin Imani and Robby Williams.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Class A Region II, Section 1 semifinal

Gilmer County 68, South Harrison 34

GLENVILLE — Defending Class A state champion Gilmer County received little resistance from South Harrison here Tuesday night in a Class A, Region II, Section 1 affair as the Titans easily improved to 20-3 after doubling up South Harrison, 68-34.

The Titans, who are set to play host at 7 p.m. Thursday versus dTrinity for the sectional championship, led 19-7 after one and 39-18 at intermission.

Kylie Shuff bucketed a game-high 19 points for the Titans, who also got 12 markers from Riley Fitzwater, 11 by Carly Somerville and eight from Grace Wellings.

Kylie Saltis’ led the Hawks with an 11-point effort.

Class A Region I, Section 2 semifinal

Ritchie County 57, Magnolia 50

PADEN CITY — No. 3 seed Ritchie County hung on late to pull off a postseason upset of No. 2 Magnolia, 57-50, Tuesday night in a Region I, Section 2 semifinal at Paden City High School.

Dave McCullough’s Rebels had a 10-point lead at halftime that got as high as 15 in the second half before the Blue Eagles began their comeback.

Paced by Kelsi Chapman, Jordan Delaney, and Taylor Ludwig’s double-digit efforts Tom Tisher’s squad cut the lead down to two points at one point in the fourth period.

However, Ritchie pulled away late behind six of Cassie Tallman’s game-high 21 points at the charity stripe and a combined six points from Stephanie and Samantha Kirk in the final eight minutes.

Stephanie and Abi Haught joined Tallman in double-digit scoring figures with 16 and 10 respectively. Samantha Kirk finished with eight points, with Ashley Davis rounding out the Rebels’ scoring with her lone duece.

Ritchie County will look to host a regional co-final when they take on St. Marys at 7 p.m. Friday night back at Paden City High School.

Class A Region I, Section 2 semifinal

St. Marys 66, Tyler Consolidated 51

PADEN CITY — Whitney Jemison bucketed a career-high 20 points and pulled down 15 rebounds on Tuesday night to help lead St. Marys to a 66-51 Class A, Region I, Section 2 triumph against Tyler Consolidated.

The 17-6 Blue Devils also got a double-double from Jordan Fox, who scored 10 points and pulled down 10 caroms. Addie Furr drained a trio of 3s en route to 15 points while Jenna Nichols chipped in eight points, eight assists and five steals.

The Silver Knights (10-13) were led in scoring by Josey Jones with 19. Peyton Kocher had 10 markers and Amanda Reynolds added eight in the setback.

St. Marys returns for a 7 p.m. sectional championship game on Friday in Paden City versus Ritchie County.
