PHS, South swimmers advance to state finals
MORGANTOWN — A plethora of Parkersburg and Parkersburg South swimmers will be advancing to the WVSSAC State Swimming championship today. Both teams will have participants competing in individual and relay events for the finals at the WVU Natatorium in Morgantown.
Parkersburg’s team of David Snider, Aidan Azinger, Nathan Burd and Brady Colvin placed first in the boys 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.13. South’s squad of Reece Fletcher, Seth Wright, Brandon Lawson and Devan Wilson trailed in 6th place for that event at 1:48.67, but also advanced. PHS’ Gemma Cox, Ashlyn Poling, Mariah Sands and Kaitlyn Rexroad qualified in the girls 200 yard medley relay in 11th place.
The Patriot team of Wilson, Seth Wright, Josh Lynn and Dominic Collins claimed their own top spot in the boys 200 yard freestyle relay prelims with a time of 1:32.34. PHS’ girls (Julia Collett, Olivia Collett, Kate Snider and Grace Cox) claimed second in the girls 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:50.45 and 4th in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The South girls squad (Sierra Wright, Makayla Burns, Kristen Hudgins and Cassie Fink) claimed 10th place in the 200 freestyle relay and 10th in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
Another Big Red squad consisting of Brady Colvin, Ben Carter, Snider and Burd took second place in the boys 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:27.43. They were trailed by South’s team of Lynn, Collins, Wilson and Lawson in fourth place.
Parkersburg South’s Collins led the boys 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.90, pacing just ahead of Parkersburg’s Burd with 21.94 for second place. South’s Seth Wright also qualified for 12th place.
Parkersburg’s Burd led the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 48.13. South’s Collins followed in third with 50.41 and Wilson at 51.46 for fourth place. PHS’ Cox took third place in the girls 100 freestyle with teammate Burns placing ninth. Cox also broke Abby Hendershot’s 100 freestyle record with a 53.78.
Parkersburg’s David Snider soared to first in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:48.69. Teammate Colvin trailed at 1:57.93 for 8th place. In the girls 200 yard freestyle, PHS’ Cox took third (2:05.51) with Julia Collett trailing in ninth place. South’s Burns placed just behind for 10th in the same event.
Snider also led the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 53.91, surpassing Tim Phillips’ record in that event.
South’s Wright qualified at 8th place in the 100 yard breastroke.
PHS’ Carter placed ninth in the boys 200 yard IM event with a time of 2:22.97. Kate Snider took 4th place in the 200 yard IM, breaking Amy Alt’s record with 2:19.09.
“Both sides swam pretty well today. We kind of expected that coming in, but I was still having some nerves about it starting out,” Parkersburg’s head coach Terry Nisewarner said on the team’s multiple qualifiers. “They really stepped in, dropped times and even managed to break some team records. It’s been a great meet.”
