No. 12 Ohio State 108, Southern 73

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Kelsey Mitchell scored 23 points, becoming the fastest player in NCAA women’s basketball history to reach 2,000 points, and No. 12 Ohio State cruised to a 108-73 win over Southern on Wednesday night.

Mitchell, who has played in 78 games, reached the milestone with a pair of free throws with 3:54 to play. She tied for eighth fastest in reaching 1,000 points, getting there in 41 games.

Freshman Tori McCoy came off the bench, hit all 10 of her shots and scored a career-high 25 points for the Buckeyes (7-3).  Shayla Cooper added 19 points and Sierra Calhoun had 13 with career highs of eight rebounds and three blocks. Mitchell, who was 9 of 10 from the line, also matched her career high of eight assists as Ohio State had a season-best 26 helpers on 36 made field goals.

The Buckeyes made 12 of 17 shots, including all three 3-pointers, to lead 33-13 after one quarter — for the most points they’ve scored in a quarter this season. They finished the game at a season-high 61 percent.


North Carolina 73, Marshall 53

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Marshall women’s basketball team dropped its final non-conference road matchup of the 2016-17 season, 75-53, to UNC Wednesday evening at the Carmichael Arena.

Freshman Ashley Saintigene played tough in the inside for the Herd in the second half while playing with four fouls. She finished the game with nine points and 11 rebounds with the majority coming in the final two quarters.

The Herd finished with three players in double-figures on the boards. Khadaijia Brooks tied Saintigene for the most with 11, including six in the first quarter, and redshirt senior Talequia Hamilton grabbed 10.


Glenville State 79, Alderson Broaddus 76

PHILIPPI — Glenville State College rallied from a 44-32 halftime deficit here Wednesday night to knock off host Alderson Broaddus, 79-76.

Brett Morris led the Pioneers (3-3) with game-highs of 21 points and three blocks to go along with eight rebounds and four assists. Terry Davis Jr. finished with 16 points and missed a double-double by one rebound for the G-men, which also got double figures in scoring from Brook Ely with 11.

The Battlers (1-7) had three starters finish in double figures led by Sam Sanders’ 18 markers. Dorrell Foster added 17 points while AB’s Chavez Harper finished with 17 and pulled down a game-high dozen boards. Mike Mitchell came off the bench to supply 14 points and nine caroms in the setback.


High school basketball:

Dover girls 42, Marietta 34

DOVER, Ohio — Natalie Brooks and Hannah Grosel scored 11 points apiece, but it wasn’t enough for visiting Marietta in a 42-34 loss to Dover Wednesday.

A slow start plagued the Tigers. The Mark Hannuksela-coached team trailed 9-4 after a quarter and 22-14 at halftime. MHS got within 28-24 going into the fourth but was outscored 12-10 in the final stanza to suffer its third loss in as many tries this season.

Zoey Wisintainer scored a game-high 17 points and was the only Tornado (2-2) to score in double figures.

Marietta comes home Saturday and will entertain Cambridge High.
