Warren girls trip up Logan

VINCENT — Warren High’s balance was on display Friday night against visiting Logan.

The Warriors earned their fifth win in six tries, besting the Chieftains 42-33 thanks to solid efforts from several different players.

“We do have good balance,” said Warren head coach Amy Colgrove. “Just about every game we’ve had someone different step up.”

Friday it was Emily Jackson who led the way with 12 points, but three of her teammates weren’t far behind. Katie Rauch contributed 10, including Warren’s first eight points of the contest, while Molly McCutcheon added nine and Kate Liston tallied eight.

“I love seeing the fact that we usually have two or three at least in double digits,” Colgrove continued. “That balanced scoring is what we’re looking for. It makes us hard to defend.”

Rauch’s second 3-pointer of the game made it 8-7 early in the first quarter and the Warriors led the rest of the way. They were up 15-9 after a quarter and 22-15 at halftime.

Four straight points by McCutcheon midway through the third gave Warren an 11-point lead (30-19), its biggest of the night.

Logan didn’t make it easy on Colgrove’s squad down the stretch, though, getting within five late in the final period. However, Warren scored five of the game’s final six points to hold on.

Warren appeared set to pull away on more than one occasion in the game but miscues helped keep Logan within reach.

“We had way too many turnovers,” Colgrove lamented. “(Logan) caused a few turnovers and we didn’t take care of the ball. Seemed like we would edge out to a five, seven, 10-point lead and then just couldn’t get over the hump and would let them back in the game.”

Warren committed 14 first-half turnovers and finished the game with 20.

“We kept trying to throw it over the top,” Colgrove said. “We made some careless passes and not very smart decisions. But they’re a good team — they’re a big team.”

Led by Paige Lunsford’s game-high 16 points, the Jay Chadwell-coached Chieftains outscored Warren 12-10 to give themselves a chance going into the final stanza.

Warren, which received eight rebounds from Liston and six more from McCutcheon, then turned up the pressure defensively and forced enough missed shots to overcome its own mistakes and preserve the lead.

“We finished it out at the end,” Colgrove praised. “I was pleased with the way we were able to move the basketball. We got stops when we needed to. Those couple possessions there at the end where we had a couple straight turnovers, they could’ve got a little bit closer toward us but we made a couple good stops and finished it out.”
