PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg South’s Devin Hefner scored 10 of her 15 points in the second half to help the Patriots overcome a seven-point halftime deficit and improve to 2-0 on the year after downing Fort Frye, 48-39, at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center.

Neither team got much going early on in the game until South’s Allie Taylor sunk two free throws with 5:18 left in the opening half to get either team on the board. Those charity tosses got both teams fired up and South took an 11-10 lead going into the second period after Taylor made 1 of 2 from the charity stripe. Lexie Moore and Devin Hefner each chipped in shots from downtown for the Patriots in the quarter.

The Cadets’ Makayla Liedtke and Morgan Borich responded with threes of their own to trail by only one after one.

Ed Davis and his Patriots brought a lot of pressure in the half, full and quarter court early on and it gave Fort Frye some trouble. However, the Cadets returned the favor in the second period and held the blue and white with a touch of red clad to just five points before the halfway point.

“Fort Frye did a really good job on defense,” said Parkersburg South head man Ed Davis. “They do such a good job of taking away what you want to do

South’s only points came on 5 of 6 makes from the free throw line while Fort Frye hit some shots from the field to take a 23-16 halftime lead. Katie Hart sent FFHS to its first lead of the game when she opened up the second period with a driving deuce. Liedtke’s second three pointer of the night punched the lead up to four. Fort’s advantage got as high as ten before South’s Jordan Johnson hit two free throws to bring the Patriots within eight.

The two teams went into the locker room and each had some things to work out but South had much more of a pressing concern after going 3 of 22 from the field in the opening half.

South started shooting better and got its comeback started right out of the locker room. Hefner hit a quick duece followed by a Lexi Moore trey to close the gap to two points, 21-25. Borich hit two quick shots to but the Cadets back up by six. South pulled back to four on a pair of foul shots and a duece by Taylor. The Patriots closed to within one, 35-34, after three-pointers from Johnson, Destiney Wells, and Hefner.

“We slowed the ball down and didn’t take the first shot every time we come down the court,” said Hefner, on what allowed South to find success in the second half. “I shot a little better in the second half … The whole team did really and we got the game back in control.”

As a team, South hit 10 of 21 baskets — just under 50 percent in the go-home half.

Johnson hit a trey with 1:01 gone in the final period to give the Patriots their first lead since the end of the first quarter and the Patriots never looked back from there. The win pushed the Patriots to 2-0 on the season and dropped the Cadets to 1-1.

South will be back in action when it welcomes in Huntington and 2015 West Virginia High School Player of the Year Jordan Dawson at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the ROAC.
