High school football roundup
Parkersburg South 30, Greenbrier East 16
LEWISBURG — Visiting Parkersburg South built an early 23-0 lead and made it hold up in a 30-16 victory over Greenbrier East Friday.
The Patriots (4-4) were led in the first half by J.T. Kemp’s rushing touchdowns of 3 and 6 yards and also Brandon Hall’s 12-yard TD run.
Greenbrier East (3-5) got on the board at the 11:32 mark in the third quarter on William Honaker’s 4-yard TD run, but South answered with Kemp’s third score of the game, a 19-yard TD scamper, to make it 30-8. The Spartans scored on Devin Persinger’s 55-yard TD pass to Nathaniel Byers but got no closer.
Kemp and Hall were an effective rushing duo for South, the former amassing 153 yards on 24 carries and the latter totaling 113 yards on 17 totes. Hall was also 5 for 12 for 50 yards through the air with no interceptions.
South’s Jack Raitz recorded 3.5 sacks while Nick Yoho and Brandon Varner each had an interception.
Gilmer County 55, Hannan 0
ASHTON — Gilmer County jumped out to a 41-0 halftime lead here Friday night and never looked back.
The Titans had an impressive night on the ground with three ballcarriers going for 100 yards or more on the ground.
Cole Haley ran the ball 10 times for 108 yards and a score. Jared Pritt carried the pigskin eight times for 101 yards and a touchdown, while Trey Shuff toted the ball eight times for 110 yards and two scores.
Shuff also completed 2 of 4 passes on the evening for 57 yards and two scores.
Gilmer will be back in action next week when they welcome Parkersburg Catholic for a 7:30 p.m. start at Glenville.
Waterford 55, Federal Hocking 0
STEWART, Ohio– Waterford asserted its dominance on both sides of the ball during a 55-0 victory over host Federal Hocking Friday.
The Wildcats (8-1) accumulated 450 total yards of offense while holding the Lancers (0-9) to just 63.
Waterford got 320 yards on the ground, led by Tyler McCutcheon’s 165 on 18 carries. McCutcheon also scored two touchdowns. Braden Bellville added 85 yards and two TDs on just five totes.
Quarterback Issac Huffman only threw six times but completed three, all for touchdowns, for 143 yards. Wyatt Lang was the leading receiver with two catches, both for touchdowns, and 119 yards. Cody Harris also had a 24-yard TD reception. Huffman accounted for a fourth touchdown when he ran in from 37 yards out in the second quarter.
Webster County 16, Calhoun County 0
MT. ZION — Webster County and Calhoun County were deadlocked at 0-0 entering the fourth quarter during wet conditions here Friday night. However, the visiting Highlanders managed to find some offense in the final period of play and eked out a 16-0 win over the Red Devils.
It was tough sledding for both teams on the evening but especially for Calhoun County in the first half. Red Devils’ skill players couldn’t get much going and they finished with zero total yards in the first half.
Webster took the lead for good just five seconds into the fourth period after Collin Young recovered a fumble on the Calhoun quarterback-center exchange at the Red Devils’ 2-yard line and ran it in for the score. It was not an ideal night to do much of anything with the football and the two teams combined for 14 fumbles with each losing three.
Highlander Luke Hardway put the nail in the coffin at the 6:35 mark when he burst free for a 51-yard romp to paydirt. Chase Rose ran for his second two-point conversion of the night to set the final score.
Nick Murphy led the way rushing for Calhoun on the night with seven carries for 32 yards. In a rare occurance, the Red Devils had zero passing yards on the evening.
Calhoun County returns to action when it takes on Clay County for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff in Clay.
Tyler Consolidated 20, Magnolia 7
NEW MARTINSVILLE — Visiting Tyler Consolidated scored the first two touchdowns of the game here Friday night and the Silver Knights went on to record a 20-7 victory over Magnolia.
Tyler, now 5-3, opened the scoring when Tyler Anderson snagged a 29-yard TD pass from Griffin Phillips with 3:09 left in the first quarter, and then Phillips ran 13 yards to paydirt at 1:19 of the second stanza for a 12-0 lead.
But Magnolia (1-7) got a Nick Priem 3-yard scoring run with a Patrick Mirandi PAT at 0:07 of the second to close the gap to 12-7 at the half.
However, Tyler’s Jace Reed tacked on a 5-yard run at 7:02 of the third period for the second half’s lone TD to notch the win.
Tolsia 8, Braxton County 0
SUTTON — Tolsia loves to run the football and bad weather here Friday night was just fine with the fourth-ranked Class A Rebels, who outlasted host Braxton County, 8-0.
Derrick Merredith, who finished with 13 rushes for 88 yards, got loose on a 47-yard touchdown run and then added the two-point conversion himself for the only score of the affair with just 3:46 left before halftime.
Braxton County, which dropped to 3-5 and plays next Friday at Philip Barbour, had more first downs (12-7) and total yards (159-152) than Tolsia (6-1). Eagle Heath Cottrill rushed for 49 yards on 10 attempts and went 11 of 26 for 63 yards through the air.
Dover 49, Marietta 21
DOVER, Ohio– Marietta fell to 5-4 on the season with a 49-21 to Dover Friday.
The visiting Tigers fell behind 28-0 early and never recoved. Nate Ritzman’s 11-yard touchdown reception from Trent Dawson made it 28-7, but Dover answered right back on a 7-yard rushing TD by Dre Hess to make ther halftime score 35-7. It was 42-7 when Dominic Vanfossen ran in from 3 yards out to cut into the lead. After the Tornadoes (6-3) scored again to make it 49-14, Dawson hooked up with Danford on a 23-yard touchdown.
Marietta outgained Dover 309-287 but was plagued by four turnovers, including two Dawson interceptions.
Fort Frye 31, Shenandoah 8
BEVERLY — Fort Frye High celebrated a Pioneer Valley Conference football championship here Friday night.
Getting literally down and dirty, the host Cadets, sparked by sophomore quarterback Tate Engle, defeated PVC foe Shenandoah High, 31-8, to claim the crown.
Engle completed eight of 14 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns of 41 yards and 8 yards to Jacob Prichard. The 5-foot-11, 152-pound signal-caller also had a 2-yard TD run, and intercepted a pass on defense.
Fort running back Casey Lewis added a 3-yard six-pointer for the undefeated Cadets, who improved their record to 9-0 overall, 5-0 PVC. Going into the contest, FFHS was ranked number two in D6, Region 23.
Shenandoah fell to 4-5 overall, and dropped one game behind the Fort in the PVC with one league game left against Noble County rival Caldwell.
Monroe Central 37, Frontier 0
NEW MATAMORAS — Running back Bobby O’Donnell scored three touchdowns to lead the visiting Monroe Central Seminoles to a water-logged 37-0 victory over the Frontier Cougars Friday night.
O’Donnell set the stage early on by returning the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown and the Seminoles never looked back as they won for the first time in the 2016 season.
The Seminoles completed a return trifecta on a night where heavy rains turned the field from grass to mud as they scored touchdowns on O’Donnell’s kickoff return, a 59-yard punt return by Ryan LaFollette and a crucial 95-yard interception return in the third quarter by Jarett Hooper that proved to be the key play in the game.
O’Donnell finished the game with 112 yards rushing on just eight touches to lead the Seminoles.
The loss dropped the Cougars season mark to 1-8 and also took its toll physically as at least four players were injured in the second half and were unable to return.
