Marietta College Pioneers struggling as they prepare to welcome Baldwin Wallace for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff Saturday
MC?to host Yellowjackets at 1:30 p.m. Saturday
MARIETTA — Marietta College has been having difficulty putting points on the scoreboard.
In 12 quarters of play this season, the Pioneers have only scored in two of them.
MC is hoping to rectify the matter when it hosts Baldwin Wallace University in an Ohio Athletic Conference football game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Don Drumm Stadium.
Last year, Marietta dropped a 38-0 decision to the Yellow Jackets on Tressel Field at the George Finnie Stadium in Berea.
Winless MC (0-3 overall, 0-2 OAC) is coming off a 28-10 setback to rival Muskingum University (2-1, 1-1)in the Shriners game at McConagha Stadium in New Concord.
Roger Walker rushed for 64 yards on 15 carries to lead the Pioneers in that offensive category. Nick O’Neal added 57 yards on the ground on 15 attempts and one short touchdown run of two yards.
Jimmy Embrescia had Marietta’s other points on a 34-yard field goal and a PAT.
All of MC’s scoring came in the second stanza. This season, the Pioneers have yet to score in the first and third quarters.
Marietta quarterback Darrien Fields completed 14-of-20 passes for 111 yards and one interception. He was picked off once. His primary receiver was Nick Hineman, who had seven receptions for 65 yards.
Defensively, Cody Walker had 13 tackles, and was honored as MC’s Player of the Game. Corey Hunsberger added eight tackles for the navy blue and white gridders.
After Marietta lost to Muskingum in the afternoon, host Baldwin Wallace (1-2, 0-2) did the same that evening, falling 49-7 to top-ranked University of Mount Union before a crowd of 7,050 fans.
BW senior Bryon Cook had four receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown catch of 40 yards from QB Robbie Plagens. Jake Hudson also took some center snaps for the Yellow Jackets against the Purple Raiders.
Plagens is expected to start against MC.
Austin Smith is one of Baldwin Wallace’s leading ground-gainers. In BW’s 42-0 season opening win against Defiance College, he rushed for 91 yards on 24 totes, and was honored as the OAC Football Offensive Player of the Week.
On defense, the Jackets’ top hitmen have been Brian Stepp and Sam Groff.
