Waterford tops Fairfield, 7-1
CHILLICOTHE-Isaac Huffman and Clay Hayes combined to make sure Waterford’s season did not end Saturday in a 7-1 Division IV district semifinal victory over Fairfield at VA Memorial Stadium.
Huffman was 2 for 3 with a triple and his first home run of the season while Hayes pitched a compete game, two-hit performance with seven strikeouts and was also 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a double at the plate.
Waterford (19-7), which will play in a D-IV district final against TVC-Hocking rival Trimble at 5 p.m. today in Chillicothe, jumped out to an early 3-0 lead Saturday thanks to two runs in the first and one in the second. Fairfield cut it to 3-1 with its lone run in the fourth, but the Doug Huffman-coached Wildcats got it back in the fifth to make it 4-1. Waterford all but secured the win with a three-spot in the sixth to make the score 7-1. Hayes held Fairfield scoreless over the final three frames to put Waterford a win away from the “Sweet 16.”
Cameron Bosner and Bryce Hilverding had two hits apiece to contribute to the Wildcats’ cause, while Devyn Farley and Braden Bellvile both had one hit. Riley Burns added an RBI.
Waterford finished with 10 total hits and two errors. Fairfield committed four miscues in the field.
Today’s contest between Waterford and Trimble will be the rubber match of the series as the two teams split a pair of regular season games.
